American as Apple Pie?!
American as Apple Pie?
We will be having cousins (ages 15 & 25) visiting U.S. from Germany. Please give me a selection of approximately five meals or foods that would scream "American" (no fast foods). Also, what would you consider a "must try". Thanks

1.New Orleans Meal
Shrimp and Andouille Gumbo with a side of Fried Okra and skillet cornbread. Serve with a California red wine like a Sangiovese or a Malbec. Even though it's seafood it's tomato based & zingy and will need a strong wine to stand up to it. For the kids serve fresh squeezed lemonade. Serve with Pecan Pie and Vanilla Ice cream alamode
2. Chicago style grilled Hot Dogs
Use a nice kind of dogs with skins like Koegel's and serve sides like a home made American Potato Salad and a light coleslaw. Serve with an American Brew like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. For the kids pick out various flavors of Jone's Soda. Serve with a blueberry creamcheese cake.
3. African American Summer BBQ
Garlicky Pork Ribs with Greens and fresh watermelon Use up the rest of any leftover potato salad and coleslaw from the hot dog night. Try serving with an American Brewed Lager like Samuel Adams or Pennsylvania made Rolling Rock to diffuse the intense flavors. For the kids make A&W Rootbeer Floats. Serve with Sweet Potato Pie.
4. Chicano style Tacos with chorizo filling or shredded chicken with mole (Putting tomato, lettuce, cheese etc in a taco originated in the USA!). If you are daring try making a watermelon Margarita with any leftover from the Rib BBQ. Freeze it in the fridge and it makes a nice slushy base for the tequila. For the kids purchase Jarritos sodas in assorted flavors available at any Mexican American supermarket. Serve with a delicious chocolate chile cake.
5. Fried Chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and a side of green beans with almond slivers and caramelized onions. Serve with a Napa Valley Chardonnay. For the kids make a nice juice based punch. To do this on the night before make a pouch out of a paper coffee filter of 1/4 tsp nutmeg, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp cloves. Pinch up the coffee filter and close by using an extra bread twisty. Take a gallon of Apple juice and submerge the spice pouch. Put in the fridge overnight. The next day find a Fiesta ware pitcher or something as decorative. Pour 2 cups of cream soda into the pitcher. Fill with the rest of the spiced apple punch. Float fresh raspberries on top. And finally, give your guests a grand send off by serving them to a generous helping of warm homemade Apple Pie!
A must try?!!! Every single one of these!! Fry bread for breakfast, Chicago style pizza for lunch.... Each express what America was built upon: the diversity of a nation. Even when a culture brings it's own recipes over, they are modified and celebrated as unique in the USA!
The classic heavy American breakfast: eggs (fried, scrambled, poached, or fancy variations like eggs benedict), bacon, sausage or ham, corned beef hash, home-fried or hash brown potatoes, pancakes or waffles (in maple syrup).
The lighter American breakfast: cold cereal (corn flakes, oat flakes, granola, or sweetened children's cereal) or hot cereal (oatmeal, cream of wheat), cottage cheese.
The classic American lunch: hamburgers, frankfurters, sandwiches (BLT: bacon, lettuce and tomato, tuna salad, tuna melt, chicken salad, egg salad, grilled cheese, ham, sliced turkey, salami, roast beef, corned beef), macaroni and cheese casserole.
American classic meat main dishes tend to be based on beef, pork and chicken with some seafood. Pot roast is made from a usually inexpensive cut of beef oven-roasted in liquid with onions and other vegetables. Meat loaf consists of ground meat mixed with breadcrumbs or other fillers and flavorings, oven-roasted in a loaf pan. Pork chops are often pan fried. Chicken is roasted or pan or deep fried. Ribs (beef or pork) are usually slow cooked in a sweet or vinegar-based sauce. Steaks, chops, and fish fillets are pan-fried or broiled. Turkey is prepared for holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Common American side dishes are French fried potatoes, mashed potatoes, egg noodles, rice, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, green salads with a wide array of dressings, and vegetables like carrots, broccoli, or green beans. Corn on the cob is typically American.
Besides apple pie, pecan and pumpkin pies are also typically American. Or a simple chocolate cake and ice cream will round out the meal.
