Why does an ice cream cone have the grid on the bottom of it?!

Question:

Why does an ice cream cone have the grid on the bottom of it?

Answers:
I assume it's because the grid stops you from putting ice cream all the way to the bottom, leaving a place for the ice cream to go when it starts to melt, thus saving the bottom of the cone from going soggy too soon.

I am not sure

You'd just have to ask why is the earth round Bobby, and the answer will make itself known.
