Vegemite is one of several yeast extract spreads sold in Australia. It is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract (a by-product of beer manufacture) and various vegetable and spice additives. It is very dark reddish-brown, almost black, in color, and one of the richest sources known of Vitamin B. It's thick like peanut butter, it's very salty, and it tastes like - well let's just say that it is an acquired taste!

I don't know, but I really hope someone answers this question!

The answer is in the name.

Vegemite is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract, a by-product of beer manufacture, and various vegetable and spice additives. The taste may be described as extremely salty, slightly bitter, and malty, similar to the taste of beef bouillon. The texture is smooth, resembling margarine, although somewhat firmer and sticky.

And I personally don't like it either...
?

Vegemite is a concentrated Yeast Extract, which means it's basically made from yeast, salt & malt. I know,it doesn't sound very appetising but it's actually quite delicious (and very low in fat). Funnily enough, we have a radio station here in Sydney who feed vegemite on toast to all Americans who visit us and the only one to have genuinely liked it so far is Jack Black. I knew I liked him for a reason!!!
But don't judge us! Us aussies would no sooner eat peanut butter and jam (jelly) than you would vegemite! Different countries...different taste buds!

I believe it is a "yeast extract" whatever that is. It looks horrible and obviously is an acquired taste. Yes, I tasted it.

Yep, it's leftover brewer's yeast extract...I think it must be an acquired taste...I'm from Canada and I like it...the reason I ever ate to begin with is because I asked my mum what Vegemite was after hearing the Down Under song by Men At Work in the 1980's as a kid...

Never had it and don't want it. It looks nasty and smells the same. Don't know what's in it but they can have it.
