Cake looks like like crap can i cover it in whipped cream?!

Question:

Cake looks like like crap can i cover it in whipped cream?

it's late and my icing looks crap on my daughter's cake is there a way i can cover it up? What if i put whipped cream all over it? will it hold up untill tomorrow? don't have much icing sugar left but have plenty of cream, eggs and sugar.

Answers:
If you are going to put cream on it - wait until tomorrow or else it will make it slightly soggy on top.
With some of my cake experiments in the past I have carefully cut off the top layer with a good knife and either iced again or turned the cake upside down and iced the bottom layer.

I would cover it and put in the fridge. Then tomorrow before you need it frost it with the cream.

Go for it!

Whipped cream or cool-whip would work or you could try dipping a wide knife in water and running it over the cake to smooth out the icing. You could also buy those pre-made candy/sugar cake decorations to put on the top to cover it up.

What about sprinkling it with sprinkles or icing sugar.... quick, easy and cheap to. I wouldn't trust the whipped cream on the cake overnight.

the good thing about an ugly cake, is that it tastes exactly the same as a perfect one :)

That would work, but it may not hold up well overnight. Besides that is a lot of work, making your own Whipped Cream. Decorate it with something that your Daughter really likes, mini-marshmallows, nilla wafers, etc. She will think you did it just for her, not knowing you were covering up a mistake...Mom is a hero!!!

I agree with putting the whipped cream on right before you're going to serve it, sometime's it can get runny and then you'll end up with an even bigger mess.

In the future for icing cakes keep in mind a few things (not knowing why you're cake looks like crap, lol)

1. Make sure the cake is completely cooled before icing
2. brush the sides of the cake down to remove any loose crumbs, and do a very thin coat of icing icing to lock any into the sides, so when you put the final layer on, it's clean.
3. Make sure you're using enough icing, but not so much that it becomes goopy.
4. Use your spreader to swirl designs into the icing for a cake not perfectly shaped, or a piping bag works too.
5. sprinkles, chocolate shavings or nuts can be used to cover the cake in a pinch.

Lots of hints here I see. I like the idea of putting sprinkles all over it. Next time oyu make a cake, you can freeze it before you ice it, that way you will not get crumbs all in your icing. At least that's the way my mom decorated, easier to work with.
And don't be discouraged, it'll still taste good and I'm sure your daughter won't complain, maybe laugh, but not complain.
Your heart is in the right place.
