I posted this a while back, so I hope it helps you as well.
If it's iceberg lettuce, remove the stem and store in loose paper bag inside a plastic bag. (the cut stem end will turn brown, but is easily trimmed).
If it's lettuce pre-washed and packaged, just leave it in the bag. If it's fresh lettuce, like romaine, butter, or any leaf lettuce with the stem still on, kind of pull up the leaves and trim a shaving off the stem, place stem end in a bowl of water, cover loosely with a plastic bag and refrigerate. If it's loose lettuce without the stem, wash, pat dry, roll loosely in paper towels and place in zip lock plastic bag and refrigerate. It should keep up to a week, sometimes a day longer.
If the lettuce is wilted, or has brown on the edges of leaves, break or cut brown parts off, refresh in ICE WATER for about 10 minutes, then either spin or pat dry. This will "crisp" it up a bit.........as long as it isn't too far gone.
If it's still a little limp......but not slimy or brown, you can make a nice wilted salad with a hot dressing.......or chop and add to soups or stir fry at the last minute
wash the lettuce first and then wrap them in paper towels then stick 'em in a plastic ziplock bag. =DD
Put it in a container with a paper towel.
If it's head lettuce, bang the core on the counter to loosen and remove it. Run cold water through the lettuce to clean it, and wrap it in a kitchen towel, and put it in the veggie bin of the frig.
For leaf or Romain, cut the end off the stalk, wash with cold water, and wrap it in a towel also.
The towel holds the moisture, and keeps the lettuce fresh much longer.
The best way is to wrap it tightly and have it in the compartment in your fridge designed for Vegitation and fruits. Keep the humidity level at about 5 or half way.
hi my name is billie how are you today. put your lettuce in a zip lock bag then put the date on it if it goes bad you,ll see the date when you used it the last time the zip lock keeps it much fresher need more advice e-mail me billiegotmail@yahoo.com bye billie
I agree with 'Thats what's up' also cut your lettuce with a plastic knife, cos metal causes it to oxidize and go brown
you have to put some crushed iced on top of the lettuce
Hit the core hard on the counter and the core can then be pulled out. Removing the core help keep it fresh and keep it in you crisper in the fridge.
I just wrap mine in one of those plastic supermarket bags and keep in one of the vegetable bins in the fridge.
If there is a bit of browning it can be torn off, and will last 2 weeks easily.
Very cold water will freshen it up.
