Going vegan/vegetarian?!

Question:

Going vegan/vegetarian?

I watched some disturbing video from PETA, and I want to at least try going vegan... or even vegetarian.

It's going to be really difficult for me because my family... we're like meat freaks.

Anyway... If you advanced vegans/vegetarians give me some advices, delicious recipes...etc. I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you in advance. :)

wel come to the world of vegetarian because of you more animals will save their live harty congrats for that,we are vegetarian for centuries as we belong to jain religion which is more than 10000 years old, following is the list of protenis and vitamins for you and your family
Proteins: Body's protein needs can be provided by either animal or plant sources. Mixed protein diet obtained from various plant sources is better than animal protein and is recommended in diabetes, renal diseases and liver diseases. Mixed protein diet from different plant sources has been the pattern of diet in India for all vegetarians.

Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are mainly found in plant foods; like cereals, grains, fresh and dry fruits, legumes, vegetable, greens, nuts etc. plant carbohydrates include' large amounts of starches, sugar and fibers which are important for gut functions. The body is better suited to a high carbohydrate diet than a low carbohydrate diet. In fact 55% of the food intake should be carbohydrate. All animal products do not contain carbohydrate which is essential for body.

Fat: Plant fats differ from animal fats in two different ways 1) they are cholesterol free 2) they generally contain more polyunsaturated fat and less saturated fats. Plant fats usually have higher polyunsaturated fat value than animal fats.

A diet which is low in cholesterol and which contains fat of a high PIS value is associated with a lower incident of coronary health disease.

Vitamins and Minerals: plant foods are rich in many vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D is obtained by exposure of skin to sun light and this is not a problem in India.

Calcium: The vegetarians can meet their needs for calcium from dairy products. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) Dark green vegetables are good sources of Riboflavin as are legumes and whole grain cereal.

Iron: The problem of iron deficiency is relatively common but vitamin C significantly enhances absorption of iron hence it is advisable for vegetarians to include with each meal a food high in vitamin C which as lime, citrus fruits or juices.

Zinc: Zinc is found in large number of plant foods.

Fiber: Fiber is found only in vegetarian food like whole grain cereals, legumes, greens, fruits, vegetable etc.

Thus in vegetarian foods all requirement of nutrition for body growth and maintenance is fulfilled. One can have a complete and balanced diet provided we take enough food which is as close to nature as possible in maintaining sturdy and disease free body. It is equally helpful in curing many diseases.

ADVANTAGES OF VEGETARIAN DIET:
More & more evidence is surfacing that directly links a prolonged non- vegetarian diet to diseases as cancers, heart diseases, diabetes, asthma just to name a few.

1. LOGEVITY: Vegetarian can expect to live 4-10 years longer then the non-vegetarians.

" Source: Seventh day Adventists study

2. LESS HEART DISEASE: Because of low fat, saturated fat and cholesterol content of the vegetarian diet the risk of heart disease is lowered. High blood cholesterol levels are associated with increased risk of heart disease.

3. LESS CANCER: Up to 40% of all cancers are diet related. Cancer death rates have been associated with obesity and high fat / low fiber diet. Vitamin A & C are thought to be protective against colon cancer. Low fat diets protect against prostrate and breast cancer. Indoles, lignans, isoflavones, protease inhibitors which are present in plant foods and shown to be potent anti carcinogens.

4. LESS BOWEL DISEASE: Diverticular disease and appendicitis occur more frequently with low fiber intake as in meat diet.

5. LEES OBESITY & LESS INCIDENCE OF DIABETES: It is easier to plan a low fat diet for a vegetarian then for a meat eater. The fiber in plant food dilutes the energy & provides a satisfying meal without all the calories. Diabetes over the age of 40 seems to be related to obesity.

CONLUSION:
When activists like M.K. Gandhi, sports personalities like Martina Novratilova & Carl Lewis, beauties like Brooke Shields & Kate Winslet, physists like Edison, Albert Einstein & A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, religious leaders & mystics like Jesus & Osho can be legendaries in there respective fields taking the advantage of being vegetarian, Is'nt it more prudent on our part to switch over to vegetarianism & enjoy better quality & longevity of life.

I am 31 and have been a vegetarian for 14 years. It's not that big of a deal to switch. They sell meatless ground "beef", meatless "bacon", etc. Just substitute the meatless where you would normally have meat. I had "sausage" biscuits for breakfast and "beef" tacos for lunch..Yum!
Good luck! It's a great thing to do for yourself! (& the animals!)

vegan/vegetarian food is disgusting, and will make you sick if that's all you eat.

i posted a yahoo search for vegetarian below, look through and you can get recipe's and idea's about what to do

First of all....I hope you did your research on PETA's claims and not believe everything you're told. I did the research and I'm glad I did.

Use google for recipes, you'll find lots of information!

the fake meat is disgusting, i suggest the veggie burgers if any

i have been a vegetarian for about four years and have tried millions of different "meatless meats." some of them are good, some fine, and some i wouldn't eat again for anything! i would not recommend the Morning Glory veggie burgers, they have a wonderful taste, but i can't stand the texture. i also wouldn't recommend the veggie sausages or bacon. they just are bad all around. the Boca Burgers, however, have both great taste and a smooth, well-blended texture. they come in both patties, which you can grill like beef patties, and in ground "beef," which can be easily transformed into a substitute for taco meat.

well it doesnt really matter if your family are meat freaks
you can be yourself
and you can look up some recipes on the internet
they have lovely foods
im a vegetarian myself
and your best off going to Dunnes Stores at the frozen sections
they have loads of meat free things there
enjoy!

I am a vegetarian, and I went through the exact same thing that you went through. I watched videos and decided to become vegetarian. My family are also meat freaks, and I was a total meat addict. But to give them hints that I wanted to change, I left out PETA pamphlets in my room that my friends gave me and I left up vegetarian facts on the internet. And then my parents finally got the hint. They hate it, but they are living with it. But you will probably have to make some of your own food. But it works.

Now, if I were you, I wouldnt go vegan. At least not yet. Going from a meat diet straight to a vegan diet, it can totally ruin your system. Go vegetarian, and start slow. If you cant give up meat just quiet yet, just cut back on meat. And your parents would probably freak out if you went vegan.

Well, I hope that it goes well!

1. I'm gonna assume that you live with your parents and perhaps siblings. You should calmly and rationally explain to them first off, what veganism IS. Then you should explain what you can and cannot eat and ask them to respect that by not intentionally trying to feed you anything non-vegan. Also, it's very important that you share your reasons for this choice with them so they don’t write it off as some crazy teenage whim...even if they disagree with you, they should at least know why you feel strongly about it.
2. Another family advice thing, BE PATIENT WITH THEM! Chances are, they mean well, even if they accidentally hand you a bowl of mac and cheese sometime...it may well be them being forgetful, not them trying to be assholes. Just kindly but firmly explain again that you cannot eat whatever the dairy product in question is.
3. More patience- be patient with yourself. If you slip up, don’t let it discourage you. Like I said, it's a big step and if you sneak a bite of cheesecake, don’t let it screw you over too bad...the fact that you're trying means that you're greatly cutting down on your consumption of animal products anyhow, which still saves them pain and suffering even if you do slip up occasionally.
4. Create a list of snack foods or quick and easy foods that you can eat and tape it up on your fridge or wall or something so you don’t have to think so much about it every time. Eventually the list will become memory for you, so you can take it down.
5. Fortified juices and/or non-dairy milks tend to have a lot of nutrients that you may miss out on otherwise. My current favorite is Living Harvest vanilla hemp milk.
6. Rewards system- I've heard of a lot of people rewarding themselves with vegan "ice cream"...such as Tofutti or Dreamy Tofu. Experiment with the flavors to see which you like and them for every week or day or something that you don’t eat dairy products, reward yourself with some. [Personally, I’d recommend Tofutti Cuties Strawberry Wave]
7. Do not automatically assume that fake meats are vegan. Check ingredients on those and everything else like crazy. Never buy something without ingredient checking.
8. If you cant cook, learn to. There are some great simple vegan recipes all over the Internet, as well as some vegan cookbooks. Try www.vegweb.com , that place is like my bible.
9. Try making a few refrigeratable or freezable vegan meals at a time [like a weekend day when you're not busy?] so you can still eat well when you don’t have time to spend much time cooking. Microwaves are our friends.

Good luck with becoming a vegetarian, and don't let your family put you off! Kay
