Why do crackers have holes in them?!

Question:

Why do crackers have holes in them?

Just wondering what those small holes in crackers are for. Yes I loose sleep wondering about such things..

Answers:
It is called docking, it is done to keep the cracker from puffing when it is baked. The same process is used on some pie crust.

They are designed to keep the crackers from puffing up during baking, the holes allow steam to escape rather than getting trapped in the dough.

oh, that's just how they make 'em, lol.

The cracker would be a big ball if no holes...
