How to pick the sweetest watermelon from the grocery store?!

Question:

How to pick the sweetest watermelon from the grocery store?

I see people thumping them all the time, what are they listening for???

Answers:
A perfectly ripened watermelon is one of summer's true pleasures. But, because they do not ripen after picking, here's a few tricks to select a good one.

The easiest way is to look for a yellow spot where the melon rested on the ground. A ripe watermelon should also have a drab, but smooth rind; a glossy coating is a sign of immaturity.

Watermelon experts listen for a "thump" when they lightly smack the melon instead of a hollow or musical ring. If you buy a precut one, look for a moist, dense and firm texture without any white streaks.

the darkest rind

thump for heaviset and the brighter the white stripes=]

pick the most greenish one!

Pick one that has a dull green color, not a shiny one. Also it should be yellow where it has laid on the ground. Not sure about the thumping, but never pick a mushy one.

Accually the sweeter watermelons have more water in the. So all you have to do in tap them and take the one that makes the deepest piched sound.

I think if they thump and it sounded hollow then its not good, my grandpa used to do that.

its the one with the most stripes

let them float in water they'll taste better

dont thump, slap it!! it will make something like a good hollow sound, slap a few of them, & you will know what im talking about, the ones that sound like hard, dont choose that one.

Most melons sold in stores are harvested early for shipping. The earlier the watermelon is picked the less sweet it will be. If the stem is dried the melon has been harvested along time. Some stores will from time to time clip the stems to try to hide the fact that it is an old watermelon.

A watermelon is ripe when its belly turns from white to a cream or yellowish color and lengthwise ridges can be felt on the upper surface. If the belly is a bright yellow then the melon is over ripe.

The sweetest melons will come from local growers that has let the melon ripe on the vine. It is the vine ripening that makes a watermelon sweet.

Take any melon the suits your size, They wouldn't be there if they were unripe.
