Well if I butter up one side and glue the other to a cat and throw it up into the air...the side that gets stuck in my teeth is usually the furry side...LOL!!!
That would be the bran part. They're feisty little guys that are never in a hurry to do their job but, once they get started, you can't keep up!!!!
I ama former chef from Canada and make my own, and like the store bought or bakery ones, if they use whole bran, the outer husk of the bran is in the mixture, it adds fibre.
With the wheat kernal giving up the things it does, like whole wheat flour, bran and other products there is alway abit of something in each use of the germ.
