Large portion sizes being served at eating Establishments?!
Large portion sizes being served at eating Establishments?
During my father's childhood (1950's) food and drink portions were just fine. For example, a bottle of coca-cola could fit in one hand of the average person; these days, I see people getting huge sodas they have to hold with two. Do you believe out of control portion size is the leading factor to why the United States has the highest obesity rate in the world?
Answers:
Yes, I do think it plays a big role in the obesity factor in America. So many people have such busy lives that they are forced to dine out, and when portion sizes are easily three times what they should be, its understandable that people over eat. Thats why we have such a huge problem.

I believe that portion size has alot to do with the obesity problem. We are a spoiled people and if we want to eat the whole dang thing, we usually do. Be it the soda, the platter of food, the 6 serving order of fries. There is a commercial out where people are like celebrating that they get to have seconds of the Slow Churned Ice cream because its soo low in fat. That alone will be a good enough reason for some one to now down that 1/2 gallon, and feel good about it when they never considered it before. That and now, unlike the 50's there are soo many really tasty, processed and terribly fattening (but tasty!)things to eat. Like I said before, we are a spoiled people.
It's definitely one of them. Some restaurants serve such hugh portions I don't know how they expect a person to eat it all. What I do at home is serve dinner on our salad plates because it makes you plate look fuller. If you serve your food on a bigger plate, you're going to eat everything on it just because it's there. What also doesn't help the obesity is kids on computers all day, not getting out to exercise. I'm only 38 and I didn't have computers or I-pods when I was a kid. If you wanted to have fun, you'd go out and ride your bike or play kickball in the road. My daughter's school is requiring her grade this coming year to have 30 minutes of exercise everyday to help with the obesity rate in students. My husband and I exercise daily and have our daughter exercise also so she doesn't become an overweight adult.
Often times my gf and I will split a meal. Not entirely to save money, but getting two meals at some places (like steak and shake and ALL chinese places) is just too much.
Also, lots of restaurants offer half portions for a lesser price. Its worth it to ask.
Yes I think that's part of it. Back in your fathers day, going out to eat was a "treat" that happened once and a while, and prices for food remained steady. Now prices have gone up and portions have grown so that people will still believe they're getting value for their money, it doesn't cost food places to give you a few more ounces of pop or another handful of fries or popcorn etc, but there is that much more calories. People visit these places more and kids don't play outside as much as well.
