OK, you stumped me. I had to get out my copy of "On Food and Cooking" for this one. The word came by way of French, Portuguese and Latin. The common thread is that caramel mean light brown in all three languages. Calamari is also derived from the same root.

Thats a whooper. Well I dont really know what you mean by that caramel? The candy?Ill answer that one. I also put a referance from websters about the other word.
