Hey, well done! It must be difficult to keep coming up with new things to cook.

I make my spag bol in fairly large quantities. The longer you cook it , the better, so once all the preparation is done, you can almost forget about it apart from a stir now and again. I always add red wine - the alcohol evaporates during the cooking, and it adds a rich, deep flavour, but you can leave it out and add stock instead. The mixture is also good used for a Cottage Pie - Shepherd's Pie (which is made with lamb) - with mashed potato on top. And it's also nice properly reheated and served with a baked potato.

Chop a couple of sticks of celery and one or two carrots into small cubes. (Don't bother peeling, just scrub well.) In a large pan, add a little oil and gently cook. Add a chopped onion and garlic to your taste, and cook all until soft. Transfer to a bowl. Turn the heat up and add your minced beef, breaking up until it browns. Add the vegetables and mix well.

Add a tin of chopped tomatoes, half a bottle or so of red wine or stock, and season. (Oh, nearly forgot: also add at this time about a tablespoon of tomato puree.) Not too much salt. Then simmer for at least two hours.

It's even better when reheated. You can use other vegetables you like. I've also heard on good authority that a few chopped chicken livers and a splash of sherry make a huge difference!

i like spicy stuff, but u can put something like a little balsamic vinegar for extra flavor

Try adding thinly chopped carrots and spicy sausage

If you are cooking to a budget, there is a cheap way to make spagetti bolognaise that is still tasty. Buy one of those sachets of powder called "Spagetti Bolognaise", it think it is Continental brand. All you do is cook your onions and beef, add some finely chopped zuchinni ( if you like zuchinni that is ), then add a can of tomatoes ( chopped ) then add the sachet of Spagetti Bolognaise powder. That is all you need. This way you don't need to buy the bottles of ready made spagetti sauce and because the powder thickens, you don't have to add tomatoe paste. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I steal an ingredient from another great Italian sauce. I put some Vodka in mine.

I ike to add mushrooms to my spag bol, I have also added some spicy sausage called chorizo, and also some bacon you can add either of the individually or all together. Dont forget the bolognaise sauce can be used for a number of other dishes like lasagna and cottage pie.

You should be very proud of yourself looking after your sisters like that, should you have any more questions please post them here and I will keep an eye out and help in any way I can.

Keep up the good work

Hello. I sympathise with your situation. I once found myself cooking a fair few dinners between 12 and 15 for my younger brothers. Here are some tips that are easy and cost effective:

* Try cutting up veggies and put them into the sauce. They will benefit from the nutrition and you can hardly taste them because of the power of the sauce.

* Herbs are the BEST thing when it comes to almost every pasta dish. They are cheap and have such unique flavours and properties. Experience as to which ones really enhace the flavour.

* Whenever possible, use fresh minced meat rather than one from a can. It really does make the world of difference.

* Sometimes I used to break open a can or two of tuna or salmon. It would break up into very small peices and add a new flavour to the sauce including getting some healthy oils and fats in there too.

* Have a look on the net - there are some incredible Spag Bol recipes. My favourite of all time is Jamie Oliver's 'real' Spaghetti Bolognaise (The Naked Chef).

Darren.

Ooo spaghetti! My favorite! I SECRETLY put in grated provolone and crumbled feta cheeses. Just be sure not to add too much or else you'll have a cheese sauce, which is god as well. About 1/4 cup all together does the trick.

Try some sweet chili sauce......yummo!

I pour a little balsamic vinegar in the sauce.
