what is the difference between icing and frosting and how and where do you use these two items?!

In the US, "frosting" and "icing" have become interchangeable terms, although some in the US still stick to the the older usage where "icing" is more like a glaze that is poured on as a liquid, which solidifies, and "frosting" is something that needs to be spread by hand.
they are the same thing with 2 different names.
I have heard that frosting is what you frost a cake with and icing is what you cover donuts or drizzle on bundt cakes but most people call donut topping glaze.....
If icing did not have dairy in it, why do most donut or cake "icing" recipes call for milk.

In my opinion, the 2 terms are interchangeable and generally mean a sweet concoction used to cover and decorate baked goods.
I think frosting has dairy. like milk or butter, and icing doesn't. You see frosting on layer cakes, and icing on things like bundt cakes.
frosting is American for icing.
The terms are interchangeable. And, as an American, I've heard both throughout my life.
