Fried Green Tomatoes?!

Question:

Fried Green Tomatoes?

I need a recipe for fried green tomatoes which doesn't require bacon drippings....at the moment, I don't have any....is there a GOOD recipe I can follow which doesn't require bacon drippings?

Answers:
I fry them in canola oil. Slice tomato about 1/4" thick, dip in egg and seasoned bread crumbs or for a lighter coating use seasoned all purpose flour and fry until golden. Wish I had some right now.

You can fry them in oil. No biggie really. I fry mine in regular cooking oil. Peanut oil is the best, though.
Slice the tomatoes into 1/4 - 1/2-inch slices. Salt and pepper them to taste. Dip in meal and fry in hot grease or oil about 3 minutes or until golden on bottom. Gently turn and fry the other side. Serve as a side dish - delicious with breakfast!

None of them really require bacon grease, they say to use bacon grease because it gives the tomatoes a better flavor.
You can use any kind of grease you want.
If you don't have bacon grease use something like Crisco.
So use any recipe you want

Just use vegetable oil instead. Works just as well.

You can just sub veg. oil for the bacon grease in the recipe. Be sure to salt and pepper the tomato slices before dredging in coating.

I use olive oil. I put seasoned bread crumbs on them and fry in olive oil.

The big thing with fried green tomatoes is how you slice them! Some people really like them thin and others nice and thick. So experiment with that.

We use butter to fry them up. However, since butter can brown, don't cook them on too high of heat.

If you prefer high heat, you can use just about any oil that isn't too strong - canola, for example. You might add some ham strips if you have ham available.

We just use flour, salt and pepper and fry in a mix of canola and butter. Yummy!

Enjoy!
