Have you seen the Tropical Pool Cake on the June Woman's Day magazine?!

Question:

Have you seen the Tropical Pool Cake on the June Woman's Day magazine?

I'm going to make it for my son's first birthday! I'm going to make it carrot cake instead though. He pointed the magazine out at the store the other day and I just had to get it so I could make it for his Birthday! Any tips on how to make the coconut tree palms leaves? It sounds hard to make them.

I just looked at the web site (above) - totally cute cake - there are directions with pictures and though it doesn't look hard to do - it looks time consuming. I would be tempted to use plastic trees (try a party supply store like Nobie's) - or hit one of those candy stores with tons of different types of candy and see if there are candies all ready made you could use to make the leaves - fruit roll ups cut out to form the leaves, and then adhere with Karo syrup could be the way to go -

You could use fruit roll ups.............

Though you pretty much got your answer, Woman's Day makes a cake similar to this each year. I've made cupcakes for my daughter's birthday on a beach scene I got from the magazine. I used blue icing for the water, used crushed graham cracker crumbs for the sand, Teddy Grahams in gummy lifesavers to make it look like an innertube, and a cocktail umbrella for another bear to lay under. They are so cute I made them two different years for my daughter to take to school. WD also has a cute cell phone cake and a jewelry box cake too. Happy Birthday to your son.

I make this cake last night for my daughter's 10th birthday but I modfied it quite a bit (the shopping list for the decorations on this cake is wild!!) I couldn't find the green wilton's choc. here so what I used instead was the white candy you normally melt to dip pretzels in and I added food coloring. I think it would have been better if I had had the other, but I ended up with a pretty decent (if very large) palm tree for the cake. LOL the great thing is if you mess up, you can just re-microwave the whole deal! Good Luck to you and Happy Birthday to your son!
