Why is my raw chicken so yellow?!

Question:

Why is my raw chicken so yellow?

I've just got the chicken breasts out of the fridge to cook for dinner. They are organic chicken breasts that I bought last night. One looks nice and pale pink like it usually does, but the other has a distinct yellow tinge to it. I've never seen this before, is it okay to eat?

Both breasts smelled fine. I've cooked them now and they look identical. I'm going to serve myself the yellow one but if it tastes funny I won't eat it. If I don't come back then watch out for the yellow chicken!

Does it smell ok? If it does it'll be ok. The yellow colour could be if it was corn fed. I eat only organic meat, and have never seen this in organic chicken. Read the label (if there is one) or ask the manager of the butchery dept next time you go. If in any doubt, don't eat.

They were probably fed corn which makes them a little bit yellow.

They must have fed it some strange substance to make it grow quicker and it has now turned yellow. Take it back to the shop

because it has been fed on grain, they are suppose to be that colour!!!!!!!!

If it were me, I would not chance it. I would call the store you bought it from and ask to speak to somebody in the meat department/butcher, and ask them their opinion. Obviously they have to look at meat quite a lot during the day, so hopefully they can give you a good answer.
If in doubt after you ask, when it comes to chicken and meat in general, it's always best to be safe and throw it out rather than to have to take a trip to the hospital later tonight.

If it smells funny do not eat it, but some organic chickens are corn fed, so it will look yellow. trust your nose.

corn fed chicken is yellow

are they corn fed? sometimes this makes them look yellowy...however could be bird flu!..haha only joking, reckon they are corn fed...perhaps the yellow one came from a greedy corn troughing bird!..if they dont smell and arent slimey then you wont die...the worst you'llget is belly ache, if you are worried about any meat, sprinkle with salt, rub it in then rinse under the tap...its a good cleansing trick. However, if any meat stinks...bin it!..goes without saying really. If you have a cat and it turns its nose up, its no good, if you have a bloke -he'll eat anything, so if you do and youve had a big barny - give him the yellow chicken or stinky meat!

the chicken that is yellow may have been corn fed

its to do with what the chicken was fed on, it's also to do with the fact the meat has'nt been 'pumped' with water to make it look pink so your 'yellow' chicken is very natural and very fresh!!!

It may have been fed on corn (maize)

Personally I always choose grass reared meat.

At least the chicks should have had some chance to scratch around and select their natural food

Corn-fed chicken is yellow.

The yellow chicken was fed primarily on corn. It is perfectly healthy and delicious. Nothing to worry about.
