How do you make homemade frosting for cupcakes and cakes?!

Question:

How do you make homemade frosting for cupcakes and cakes?

Would you just use butter and powdered sugar or do you and something else.

Answers:
Can we assume you mean buttercream icing? I use a recipe from Wilton's. Try making it with all crisco and add a touch of almond extract. People rave about my icing...if they only knew!

Buttercream Icing

Ingredients:
1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
1/2 cup butter or margarine*
1 teaspoon Clear Vanilla
4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar (approx. 1 lb.)
2 tablespoons milk**
Cream butter and shortening with electric mixer. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Keep icing covered with a damp cloth until ready to use. For best results, keep icing bowl in refrigerator when not in use. Refrigerated in an airtight container, this icing can be stored 2 weeks. Rewhip before using.

YIELD: 3 cups

*Substitute all-vegetable shortening and 1/2 teaspoon Wilton No-Color Butter Flavor for pure white icing and stiffer consistency.

**Add 2 tablespoons light corn syrup per recipe to thin for icing cake.

You can use cream cheese with the butter and powdered sugar. Blend the cream cheese and butter together good then add powdered sugar.

I use confectionary sugar, butter, crisco, vanilla extract, and a big splash of milk. It's yummy!! And once you get the consistency right, it is easy to decorate with too.

BUTTER CREAM FROSTING

3 tbsp. softened butter
1 c. powdered sugar
1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa
2-3 tbsp. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

In small bowl, beat butter. Add powdered sugar and cocoa alternately with milk; beat until smooth until a smooth spreading consistency is achieved. Blend in vanilla.

I use powdered sugar and milk. A lot of powered sugar, then add a TINY bit of milk. Add food coloring and stir together with spoon.

Here is my favorite recipe. It is chocolate. It is so good that you can just double up if you screw up your cake. :)

Chocolate Frosting

3 Tablespoons Butter (salted, softened)
3 Tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa (like Hershey's)
1 Tablespoon of Light Corn Syrup
1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1 Cup of powered sugar
2 Tablespoons of Milk

Beat butter, cocoa, corn syrup, and vanilla in a small bowl. Blend well. Add Powered Sugar and Milk, beat until very creamy and uniform in color. (Makes 1 cup)
