Hi

Pea soup should start with a ham bone as well as the meat, carrots, onion and some spices. Pea soup should be made the day before you eat it as it takes a long time to make. Its not hard just time consuming. If you are single person and would perfer to make a small ham and pea soup you can get Ham Steaks with the bone in and use that. You must cut the ham off the bone before boiling it in water, just don't use too much water 2 - 6 cups would do, depends on how much you want to make. Boil the bone in the water for quit some time, then you can add the split peas. they are dry and hard and take a long time to soften, but you don't want it to boil and must stir it often because the softened peas will stick to the bottom of the pot and burn and it will taste gross.
The whole recipe for a great Pea Soup can be found at the following Site...

You'll want to start it early boil your water then put in you ham chucks and bone if you have one add garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper pour in your spit peas leave boil one hour turn off leave set two hours (as the cooling procces actually softens the peas or even bean faster) then cook at a med heat checking water levels periodicly for another three hours.

Enjoy it's one of my favorite soups.
