Is it possible to add something to ice to make it melt more slowly?

I have noticed that ice in McDonalds drinks takes a very long time to melt. Sometimes it will last 4 or 5 hours.

I don't know about McDonald's but it helps if you freeze hot water.

Nothing really added to it. An ice cube that is dropped into sugar or salt will melt much slower than an ice cube dropped into a regular glass of water. Also there are other factors like how often you hold the cup and how cold the soda is when it is dispensed.

No! Some people have the misconception that salt slows the melting of ice. Salt lowers the temperature at which water freezes, as does a host of other "solubles". Ice that is held at temperatures well below freezing will melt slower because it has less heat than ice held just held just below freezing. The material the cup is made from, whether or not it has a lid, the temperature of the cola added to the ice and the ambient temperature all affect the rate at which the ice in a fountain drink melts.

these people are WRONG-O!

...any solution makes the tempurature for freezing LOWER. the reason that rock salt is thrown on roads is not to keep it icy for LONGER,it's to make a solution which makes the ice more liquidy*(non frozen) so it has a chance to run off the road or to cause less big slidey vehicle accidents.

---maybe Mickey D's just keeps their ice cubes much colder than 32degrees to start with,& that's why it lasts so long.

but really now,it's McDonald's.you know they probl'y have some funky preservative that give you cancer in the drink

Dry ice. Using regular and dry ice together will make a cooler last 2-3 days in full sun.

As for McDonald's, who knows what crazy augmentation they've made?
