What are marshmallows made of??!

Question:

What are marshmallows made of??

i'm talking about the non-tree sap ones. you know, the kinds fat little kids love and are artificial? ya, what EXACTLY is in them? like, what kinds of starches and animal parts? my 'friends' won't shut up about the fact that i won't touch marshmallows just because of how synthetic they are, but i want to prove to them that they really are made of crap. thanks much!!! and i do plan on choosing a best answer.....

Answers:
The grossest part about marshmallows is most are made with gelatin. And here is what gelatin is made out of:

Gelatin is made from by-products of the meat and leather industry, mainly pork skins, pork and cattle bones, or split cattle hides.

That is reason enough to never touch them!! Good for you!

Here is a recipe by Ina Garten (food network chef)

7 ounces sweetened shredded coconut, toasted
1 recipe Homemade Marshmallow batter, recipe follows
Confectioners' sugar

Sprinkle half the toasted coconut in an 8 by 12-inch nonmetal pan. Pour in the marshmallow batter and smooth the top of the mixture with damp hands. Sprinkle on the remaining toasted coconut. Allow to dry uncovered at room temperature overnight.

Remove the marshmallows from the pan and cut into squares. Roll the sides of each piece carefully in confectioners' sugar. Store uncovered at room temperature.

Homemade Marshmallows:
3 packages unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

Combine the gelatin and 1/2 cup of cold water in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and allow to sit while you make the syrup.

Meanwhile, combine the sugar, corn syrup, salt, and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Raise the heat to high and cook until the syrup reaches 240 degrees F on a candy thermometer. Remove from the heat.

With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour the sugar syrup into the dissolved gelatin. Put the mixer on high speed and whip until the mixture is very thick, about 15 minutes. Add the vanilla and mix thoroughly.

Sugar or corn syrup, egg whites and gelatin - all "natural" ingredients. If you're a vegan, you'd have a problem with gelatin. It's made from animal collagen.

Many commercial marshmallows contain some or all of the following:

artificial colour
artificial flavour
corn syrup
dextrose
gelatin
modified corn starch
natural flavour
sugar
tetrasodium pyrophosphate
water
hope that helps =)

Well, I try as much as possible to answer questions from my own actual knowledge. However, I did not actually know the answer to this one and was curious about it myself, so I looked it up.

Apparently, there is nothing really too horrible in them, except for the fact of how bad sugar and corn syrup are for you. The place I found said that part of the definition is "a confection made from the root of the marshmallow or from corn syrup, sugar, albumen, and gelatin beaten to a light spongy consistency" In case you don't know what albumen is, it is the protein from egg whites.

Anyhow, I will put a link here that shows where I got this info. Kind of interesting. Thanks for asking this, cuz I always wanted to know too!! (Feel free to give me best answer -- I love getting those -- but only if I really do make the best answer!)

Marshmallows are fluffy candies made from beaten egg whites, gelatin, and sugar syrup.

my sister is a vegetarian and she refuses to eat anything made out of geletin and Marshmallows are one of those things made out of gelatin.
She says its made out of horse hooves.
And she's done her research to make sure she doesnt eat anything that has anything to do with an animal.

"The marshmallow is a confection that, in its modern form, consists of sugar or corn syrup, beaten egg whites, gelatin that has been pre-softened in water, gum arabic, and flavorings, whipped to a spongy consistency. "

lots and lots of SUGAR!!! ( i love that soad song!! ) THE KOMBUCHA MUSHROOM PEOPLE SITTING AROUND ALL DAY!

the person that answered about it being ok to eat marshmallows if you are a vegan has no idea what they are talking about....look up gelatin...it is a by product of animals, from boiling bones (it is what comes out of the bones when they are boiled), skin, tendons. I wouldn't call them synthetic, however if you don't want to eat anything from animals...don't eat marshmallow, jello, etc.

* Sugar or Corn Syrup
* Egg whites
* Gelatin - usually from animals bones or hides, Kosher gelatin is from fish

There are Vegan marshmallows -- ones that use real marshmallow extract from the marshmallow plant or use gelatin alternatives.

Refined Sugar and gelatin. Gelatin is the stuff you get from boiling bones.
