Rennet and Gelatin?!

Question:

Rennet and Gelatin?

many cheese products contain rennet, an enzyme from baby cow stomachs and most canyies have gelatin, from boiled bones, skin and hooves. as a vegetarian, this causes a dilema. should I stop eating cheese that isnt from a health food store and stop eating candy? giving up candy would be easy, but cheese? not so much. I've called the goldfish and kraft mac and cheese companies and they both have rennet in their cheese.

Answers:
If you are veggie, of course you should stop eating them.

Until you do, you are not veggie.

There are plenty of veggie cheeses about.

a veggie does not eat meat, fish, poultry nor slaughter by-products.

So that includes all trace ingredients that come from animals.

From my 27 years as a veggie, i would say 80% of processed foods have dead animals in them...veggies need to look and learn

If you want to yeah, wow I didn't know kraft and goldfish had it in it :(, guess I'll try soy cheese lol.

Most likely the cheeses that you are eating from those type of companies have been rendered with a rennet alternative. Most cheese produced in mass quantities usually are made with a genetically modified fungus, bacteria, or yeast which produce enzymes that produce results similar to that of natural rennet. As for the issue with gelatin... There are alternative gelling agents availible but they are not widely used outside of the health food sector. However, giving up on all candies is not necessary. Just stear clear of the soft or chewy sugar based candies. Quite often hard candies like lolipops are free of gelatin. But in general stick to your chocolate confections and you will be fine.

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think beef farms are killing cows to get at their stomachs, bones, skin and hooves.

Kraft does have some (non-amilmal)enzymes in there cheese. You can buy vegetaian cheese at the produce ile in wal-mart. There are some(cheap) cheesees that contain no enzymez at all.

mac and heese and goldfish are gone tooo?!?
NOOOOOO

try mozzarella cheese. some manufacturers used microbial enzymes instead. the ingredient list should specify as "enzymes (microbial)" or similar.

but of course if you are a vegan or planning to be one, then cheese, which is a dairy product, is a strict no-no.

Many cheese products are made with non animal rennet as well..you just have to look for it. Several cabot brands are rennet free and so is Horizon brand. There is a list online. Just google "Vegetarian cheese"

Parsons brand cheese at the Health Food Store are free of animal rennant and Knox now makes a plant gelatin besides their regular gelatin product. There's probably other brands get them at your Health food store! Some yeasts are not totally free of animal microbes but most is! Yeast is made from the Morel mushroom. Beware of synthetically made yeast what do you think they use to made it synthetically? Someone told me Animal microbes whatever that is!
