Secret animal foods?!
Secret animal foods?
i know there are foods that many people don't know are vegetarian such as jell-o, yogurt, marshmallows (all 3 have gelatin, made from boiling animal bones skin and tendons) and cheese(with rennet, an enzyme made from baby cow stomachs-most of it has this) but are there any other secret foods people don't generally know aren't vegetarian? I have been a vegetarian for a little over a month and have just found out about these. ;-)
Answers:
Mayonnaise - Most contain eggs.
Bone meal - In calcium supplements & some toothpastes.
These are a few that I know. Here's a link for the whole list-

Hope this helps.
Actually, the vast majority of yoghurts don't have gelatine in. The only ones that I have come across are the ones that are meant to reduce cholestorol.
congrats on being a vegetarian . its good that you found these things out early it took me a couple months to realize how much nasty **** was in food . ive been vegetarian for a year now and im still learning things here and there but i basically have it down. some common things i see are monoglycerides/diglycerides (animal fat) , whey(contains traces of rennet) those are my 2 most common ingredients that make me put the product down.
a lot of cheeses have rennet and its a ******* bummer but horizon cheese is animal free and really good if you are looking for cheese.
watch out for bread at the store , i went to walmart and every single brand of bread had animal products in it.
be careful for natural flavors in some products , the natural flavors in ketchup is most likely not a meat product. but if you pick up a can of bush beans or the like and they say "natural flavorings" it could be pork flavoring.
ok one more , dont buy act 2 popcorn that **** is sooo nasty it says on the ingredients ..... contains milk , egg , and fish ingredients wtf??
ok thats all i can think of for now.
peace
There are millions.
Food that contains trace elements, or uses products DURING the food processing, do not have to be mentioned on the label.
So, if you have a list of ingredients, and the label does not say "suitable for vegetarians", you should not eat it.
If you do, you are just guessing where the ingredients come from and not really a vegetarian
You can alwasy spot us veggies in the shops, i've spent 27 years reading the back of packets, not the front !
Check out what your chips (or fries) are dipped in before they are cooked. Lard one place told me.
Some yogurts don't contain gelatin. I found out on this site that Tang orange drink is processed with gelatin. Perhaps you don't know that alcoholic beverages are "fined" with fish parts. It makes the beer and wine clear. Also some liquours are processed with animal parts.
Many of the foods you mentioned above do not need to contain animal ingredients. If you purchase kosher yogurt, marshmallows, gelatine or cheese, they will definitely NOT have animal ingredients, as observant Jews do not mix dairy with meat ingredients.
