Why is it that people can eat raw fish?!

Question:

Why is it that people can eat raw fish?

Whats the difference between raw fish and other raw meats? Plus who figured this out??

Answers:
Not all raw fish is safe, all sushi/sashimi is from saltwater fish, freshwater fish can contain parasites. Many times the fish used in sushi (always in US) has been flash frozen to kill any posible parasites. Raw beef is also safe to eat as long as it has been handled properly.

Chicken too often contains salmonella and pork can contain the parasite trichinosis.

While all animals can be infected with trichinosis and other parasites, it is mainly due to the way each animal is fed and raised. Pork is prone to trichinosis because they are often fed meat scraps which may have been infected. Beef on the other hand is fed grain, or is pastured and feeds on grasses.

As far as who figured it out, who knows, it was so long ago, and I am sure it was from trial and error.

Raw fish doesn't easily get that salmonela thing that mammals get.

I think it has something to do with the amount of blood in the fish compared to mammals.

Much raw fish like for sushi is marinated which kinda kills parasites.

Depending on the type of fish, it is the element of danger in eating it as I think it is a Puffer fish that has a poison sac is not properly removed can kill you.For Sushi probably because some one told them it is good. The closest I come to eating raw fish is smoked salmon.Other than the type of meat I don't think there is any difference. Raw is still raw.

Not sure who figured it out maybe the Indians .Natives,Shrimp and sushi at the buffets are good.

Many different cultures have meats and fish that they eat raw - from carpaccio (beef), sushi, oysters on the half shall, shark, squid, etc etc. As long as the food is carefully prepared you won't get sick. And cavemen were eating meat raw for thousands of years, so COOKING the meat was more of "who figured it out" than eating it raw.
