Is Shepherd's pie a pie?!

Question:

Is Shepherd's pie a pie?

Can Shepherd's pie be considered a pie?

Answers:
Yes. It's a pie as long as it's not runny and sloppy.

But I hate the pastry, so I make it in a casserole dish with vegetables.

It's a pie, like a pot pie is a pie. Crust with filling.

no it,s only potato salad with a pie crust.

Well, duh. Why do think they call it Shepherd's PIE?

i would consider it apie like food and that sounds like a good suggestion for dinner tomorrow.

If, like me, you think of a pie as something with a pastry crust, no, it is not a pie in the accepted sense. Shepherds pie is lamb, gravy and onions with a mashed potato topping. This is placed in an oven and baked until the potato is brown or alternatively the potato can be browned under a grill.

The original Shepherds Pie is from Great Britain. It was considered a poor man's meal. It does not have a pastry crust but is still considered a pie.
It consists of sauteed ground beef or lamb with few vegetables as diced carrots and finely chopped onions. Gravy is added to the sauteed meat and veggies and then lined in the bottom of a casserole dish or pan. Cooked mashed potatoes are added and spread evenly over the top. The 'pie' is baked in a 350 degree oven for about 20-30 minutes until it is braised on top.
Most likely it is called a shepherds pie because it is simple and did not have all the pie crust ingredients included.
Today there are many variations of the Shepherds Pie recipe.
