Canning foods?!

Question:

Canning foods?

Hi, I'm trying to find out how to preserve foods in a way that I can send them to my husband who is stationed in Afghanistan. I can't send fozen items because of the length of time a package takes to get there. (can't use dry ice either, it's against regulations) I was wondering if there was any light weight canning jars out there. Any info anyone has on the subject would be welcome. I just want to send him some of the foods he likes so he can have something from home besides cookies and other junk foods.

Canning jars are a certain thickness because they have to be to withstand the boiling water bath (or pressure canner) and the internal pressure. If there is a flaw or weakness in the glass, you're going to have a major mess.

You could look into dehydrating foods that he can reconstitute with water. That would make a light package. I doubt you're going to find too many light weight alternatives to canning jars.
