BEST BEFORE OCT 98. is tinned salmon safe to eat if unopened?!

Question:

BEST BEFORE OCT 98. is tinned salmon safe to eat if unopened?

Answers:
Test it on the neighbors cat......

No.

are you outta your mind throw it at some1 u hate
that shite would kill a dog if ya that hungry eat the gold fish

I really wouldn't!

The tin should be fine. Not sure about the contents though.

it may not kill you but the quality will be so bad that you will not want to eat it. best bet is to toss it.

Try it if you want but you might just phone for an ambulance just in case,I will bring you some grapes when I come to visit you in hospital

Bin it, think of the smell when you open the can.

Is that the date on the tin??? If so, I wouldn't even attempt to open it much less eat it. I'd suggest getting a new tin of salmon.

If it says best before and not use by it should be OK. If it is bad the stench will knock you out when you open the tin.

Just leave a saucer of milk next to the tin overnight and if the milk's gone in the morning, you'll know...

Salmon can make you sick with Botulism - certainly wouldn't eat it from that long ago!

I wouldn't eat it if I were you .It doesn't sound safe, could give you food poisoning .

sell it on ebay, you will get some mug that will buy it

Are you serious? Better to loose the price of a tin of salmon than to get food poisoning. Get real!

before we had best before dates on the tins we would have eaten it and never thought anything about it

In Germany tinned cans are save for five years. I would not eat it.
Greetings from Hamburg, Germany
Heinz

I would eat it if it looked and smelt OK, don't believe in "best before" dates, why trust a supermarket over your own common sense ? Some people can't make the most basic decisions for themselves. You can buy cabbage in M&S, cut up, put in plastic bags with - wait for it - cooking instructions ! For cabbage ! Nobody trusts their own judgement any more - pathetic.

I've never eaten an unopened tin of anything!!
So cannot say.
How would you swallow it anyway?

Best binned methinks!!

the salmon is much cheaper than a hospital bill soooo just buy anothe can

Not even matured yet mate! Lay it down for another ten years or so & it'll be right on!

No and even if it WAS safe to eat, I'd never eat it.

Canned foods are "sterile" indefinitely and will not make you sick if past the due date. Quality is another issue....

IDK, why don't you call me while you're in the Hospital for food poisoning, duh!

there is a big difference between what you might be advised to do and what you will. Clearly the sensible thing is to open it and if your not heaving within seconds consider it further by looking at the contents and assessing if they look as appertising as you would expect from a tin that you bought at the supermarket today.

In theory people in nuclear bunkers etc lay down tins of food for years because the canning process is very good for long term storage.

I am with the if it doesnt smell off it probably wont kill you but if in doubt chuck it out.

PS you cant smell the bacteria that can give you mild food poisoning ( thats why so many people who eat last nights piza or curry cold in the morning after a few bevvies get sick) but after that length of time the fish is going to be minging or ok I would think

keep for ever

Are you retarded? It's 9 years old. Throw it out before it explodes.

It might not taste very nice but it shouldn't do you any harm.

Did you read about that bloke that had a can of chicken from the 1940's? I think it came from wartime rationing and he ate it about 50 years later! Don't know what happened to him though!!

As long as it is not blown or dented or damaged in any way you can use it.

My mother's friend left Latvia as a refugee in 1950 and took with her a tin of smoked sprats and swore she would only open the tin and celebrate with them when Latvia became free from Russian occupation.

She opened the tin in September 1991 when Latvia regained independence and I am happy to report that Mum, her friend and I are all still alive to tell the tale!

it is okay to eat your tin as I said if it is not outwardly damaged in any way.

tinned food lasts for ages!!! companies HAVE to put Best Before on them, but they are still good!!! a tin of meat from pre WWI was opened a couple of years ago and was tested, still perfectly good for human consumption!!! tinned food rules! (apart from peas)

and concerning Choclover, it was an old couple who celebrated they're wedding anniversary by eating a tin of chicken from the 40's, they are still alive!
