What's your favorite sandwich to eat in the summer?
I'm feeding 5 people on Saturday for lunch. I want to make something a little out of the ordinary and I'm looking for inspiration. Perhaps even something that can be made from one large loaf of french bread.

My favorite sandwich in the world:
French Bread Steak Sandwich
You take grilled steak and cut it up into slices
Toast slices of French Bread and smear them with a special mixture of Mayo and Parmesan cheese
Place Steak and Cheddar cheese slices with a few leaves lettuce on the bread
These are like mini sandwiches and you should plan on 2-3 per person
I like this one...
i like toasted bread with turkey mayo and lettuce and with alot of mustard or just a subway sandwich in which i like turkey american cheese, toasted, with lettuce black olives, and salt and pepper with south west sauce
My family waits all year to be able to eat tomato sandwiches.
2 slices of bread (I prefer whole grain bread, but french would also work)
mayo or miracle whip
homegrown tomato
butter
salt
pepper
optional: lettuce or fresh spinach
1) Toast the bread (with french, you could skip this step because it's already quite nice and crusty)
2) Put butter on one slice and mayo on the other
3) Add a good amount of pepper to the bread on the butter side. You definitely want to be able to clearly see the pepper on the bread.
4) Put thick slices of tomato on the sandwich, and lightly salt them. If you want, add the lettuce or spinach.
This is the easiest, cheapest, most delicious sandwich out there, and it's very summery.
Muffaletta Sandwich
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1 cup chopped green pimento stuffed olives
1 cup pitted and chopped black-ripe olives or kalamata olives
1/2 cup roasted sweet red peppers, chopped
1 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1/3 lb salami
1/2 lb provolone cheese
1/2 lb mild cheese (such as Mozzarella)
1/3 lb mortadella cheese
1/3 lb prosciutto
1. Take one loaf fresh Italian bread (one big round for a traditional Muffaletta or individual sub loaves will do fine for smaller sandwiches).
2. Cut the loaf (or loaves) in half, and scoop out a little of the inside to make some room.
3. Make the olive salad by combining the olives and roasted pepper, garlic and vinegar.
4. Drizzle some of the olive oil and juice from the olive salad on each side of the open loaf-- use plenty.
5. On the bottom, place some salami, olive salad, provolone, mild cheese, and mortadella.
6. Top with the other half loaf.
7. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and set a heavy skillet on top of loaf or individual loaves.
8. Chill for 1 hour.
9. This helps compress for easier slicing and absorption of flavors.
10. Slice into wedges (or eat the individual loaves).
11. *The roasted red peppers are Italian-style, available at many Italian delis or in the ethnic aisle in the grocery store.

My favorite sandwich would be take french bread, with turkey, turkey bacon baked to a crisp, turkey peperoni's and mayo with a little mustard it is so good .You should try it .
A muffaletta is delicious, but can be a little labor-intensive. How about pressed Italian sandwiches?
6 artichoke hearts, steamed and quartered or 1 (14-ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained
3 plum tomatoes, chopped
1/4 cup pitted and chopped black olives
1/4 cup small diced red onions
2 tablespoons chopped parsley leaves
1 tablespoon chopped marjoram
1 lemon, juiced
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 (6-ounce) can Italian oil packed tuna, drained
Extra-virgin olive oil
1 loaf foccacia, French bread, or Italian bread, split in 1/2 lengthwise
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
Combine artichokes, tomatoes, olives, red onions, parsley, marjoram, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper and mix well. Add the tuna and mix well, being careful not to break it up too much. Drizzle with olive oil and season.
Spread the tuna mixture onto the bottom half of the bread. Top with the upper portion of the bread, press down firmly and cut into sandwich sized pieces. Brush the outside of the bread with olive oil.
Have a large, cast iron skillet or a large griddle heated. Have a smaller cast iron skillet heating on the stove. Place the sandwich on the griddle or in the larger cast iron skillet. Top with the other hot skillet and cook just until both sides are golden brown and toasted. Slice and serve.
This might now be considered a sandwich but this what i like to eat in the summer, and it is different.

bacon sandwich
Instead of serving sandwiches already made, why don't you make a nice platter of assorted cold cuts, different kinds of cheeses and sliced veg. like tomatoes, cuke, lettuce etc and let people make their own sandwich with the bread that you could serve, already sliced, in a basket ? This way, everyone get their sandwich the way they want.......Add a platter of fruits and there's the perfect summer lunch ! Good luck.
If your determined to use the french loaf, go nuts!!!! So many ideas...
Veggie sandwich: (you determine how much you will need, i will only give recipes for A LOAF)
1 french bread, cut in half length wise
1 tub prepared guacamole
1 sliced red onion
1 sliced cucumber
lettuce leaves, romaine would be good
sprouts
mayo
provolone cheese slices
Optional: tomato slices, turkey, bacon
Add all ingredients to bread, and cut into pieces to serve. You could also broil this first with only meats and cheese on it, and then add the rest of the stuff for a "hot sandwich".
BLT'S:
1 loaf of french bread, fill it with bacon lettuce and tomato and mayo...add some cheddar and roll in foil and place on a VERY HOT grill, and grill with cover closed for 5 minutes to get everything gooey and blended with that crisp bacon in the middle....yum!!!!!!!!!
