What is the english name for Pandan?!

Question:

What is the english name for Pandan?

Answers:
Pandanus amaryllifolius is a tropical plant in the screwpine genus which is known commonly as pandan and used widely in South East Asian cooking. It is an erect green plant with fan-shaped sprays of long, narrow, blade like leaves and woody aerial roots.

It has no English name only its scientific Latin name Pandanus amaryllifolius.

I'm in the U.S. and we don't seem to have a different name. Pandan leaf is sold here but mostly dry, or frozen.

If it is a noun, then it will retain it's original sound and ownership. It other words...Pandan in English is Pandan.

Hi, Pandan (if you actually mean the rice species) is originally the official name, even the British are using it since ages. In the past the Pandan leaf (from Indonesia) is cooked together with white rice in order to give it its special taste and light green colour. Nowadays the best Pandan is coming from Thailand where they grow pandan leaves together with rice to produce the taste.

its 'screwpine leaves'

I buy an extract from Indonesia from a Vietnamese market, it comes in a small bottle.

I have found it in a frozen, dried similar to kaffir lime leaves, and on rare occasionally fresh, I live in Toronto Canada, you tie the leaves in a knot and can use them in most dishes, I put one in my rice cooker.

The official name is Pandanus amaryllifolius, and it is in the screwpine family. I think that it is known by Pandan here as well. A few years ago at a cooking show, we had a wonderful Indonesian dish called Shrimp Sambal which was made using Pandan leaves to flavor it. When we went in search of the ingredient in order to replicate the recipe at home, we had a hard time finding it. In fact, one store attempted to sell us kaffir lime leaves, which have a lime flavor and aroma instead of the nutty flavor the Pandan imparts. We finally found the Pandan in the frozen foods case at an asian grocery store in Greensboro NC. The Pandan, combined with coconut milk, adds a delicious flavor and aroma to Indonesian and Malaysian cuisine. My wife loves walking in the house when I've been cooking with it!

Pandanus Leaf - used a lot in Vietnamese dessert - it gives the dessert a green colour and scent.
