Is my belt leather?!

Question:

Is my belt leather?

I recently became veggie so I'm not used to the lifestyle yet. Today I bought a belt (studded) the type punks like to wear, without thinking about what it was made from (stupid I know). Then after I bought it, I was like "Oh No maybe this came from a cow?" It has no tags so I don't know what it's made from. It looks like leather but it doesn't smell like leather. It has rubber coating on the edges. I really hope this isn't some poor cow. I feel so ashamed of myself. Do you think this could be faux leather if it has no tag?

Added detail: Yeah it has absolutely nothing written on it. It seems like I screwed up big time. Do you think I should just wear it, since its too late? Throwing it away would be worst right (It would mean a cow died for nothing) This is bad.

It doesn't even have country of origin markings? That's kind of odd.

What you can do is the hot needle test. On the underside of the belt or some other spots that aren't normally visible you touch a red hot needle to the material and if it smells like burned animal it IS made of animal, if it melts and smells like plastic it certainly isn't leather. You may also need to scrape a small area to remove the coating to test the material and not the coating.

Usually I get massive thumb-downs for posting this idea but it works and has been used for decades by antique collectors to test for cheap, manmade fake antiques. It's also used to test for fake amber, turquoise and pearls.

just go to the store and buy a really cheap belt- they are not leather

Sounds like it is faux. If you can't smell leather and if it's coated with rubber on the edges it's very doubtful it's leather.
Leather usually has a "leather stamp" somewhere on the product.

If it's leather, it'll be stamped on the back side of the belt.

Look at the inside of the belt, it should say "Genuine leather" or something to that effect if it is leather.

usually genuine leather is stamped somewhere on the under side of a mans belt......if not then it probably is not real leather

faux leather is unlikely i'm sorry.

Leather is too cheap to bother with fake stuff.

The proper faux stuff is quite expensive.

its likely leather, you can only get the faux ones is specialist shops and its dearer than leather.

I say bin it.

um, it seems like you're pretending to feel "guilty" only because it's apparently what a vegetarian would do.. you are calling it a lifestyle.. that's fine but you didn't think twice before buying the belt. it seems as if you're following a trend by being a vegetarian and doing it all for the wrong reasons.

why would it be too late if you had just bought it today? if you're not sure just simply return it.

actually most leather belts made in asia are made from (don't laugh)... chicken leather. yup. and with all the controversy with cheap fur lining discoveries that they are really dog and cat fur from asia.

if i had any kind of question or worry, i just wouldnt wear the belt. i'd take it back with a big apology like "im a vegetarian and i didn't even see the label".

there should not be any regression after bringing it to home. Use it until you feel of benefit, then simply discard and bring another one.
