Why does broccoli stink when you cook it?!

Question:

Why does broccoli stink when you cook it?

Answers:
Cuz it's gassy.

I never noticed a stench in Brocolli. It could be all in your mind.

because you're not cooking it right. you need to fry some garlic cloves in oil, then stir in the broccoli.

Broccoli is a little funky smelling if you boil it...try to saute it with some olive oil, butter, and garlic. Smells better AND tastes better.

For the same reason skunks & rotten meat smell bad: it's nature's way to protect you from the bad stuff!

cause u stink stupid ***

If you steam it for only a few minutes it doesn't smell. Try using a microwave steamer-even better.

It doesn't..... it smells like broccolli. Yummy yummy yummy.

it only stinks if you overcook it.
just steam it lightly, when the color changes to a bright very vivid green, STOP cooking!!

Broccoli, cauliflower and all the other members of the cabbage family contain sulfur compounds called mustard oils or isothiocyanates. When cooked, these and other compounds break down to form various odoriferous compounds like hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell), ammonia, mercaptans and methyl sulfide. They are not harmful, but the longer the vegetable cooks, the more molecules are released and the stronger the odor becomes. To reduce the odor, steam the vegetables only until tender-crisp, and try adding a few pieces of bread to the cooking water to absorb the odoriferous compounds.
