What food comes to you mind when you think of mediterranean cuisine????!

Question:

What food comes to you mind when you think of mediterranean cuisine????

For instance, when you think of italian cuisine, pizzas automatically comes to your mind...So, how about the Mediterranean Cuisine????

Answers: Great Question.

First of all, pizza was invented by Italians in the U.S.
When I think of Italian food I think of spaghetti.

So, since I worked 15 years in a Greek restaurant and am half-Italian and collect and prepare recipes from France, Spain, North Africa, Italy and Greece, I'm a good one to ask.

My answer would be that the Mediterranean is a region, not a nation. So the food you're seeking would probably have to be something characteristic of the Mediterranean countries, something found so plentifully there it's used more there than in other parts of the word where it's more rare.

The answer could not then be either some Mediterranean seafood, pasta dish or salad, although the citizens make fewer meats and soups in the area.

This is because the North Africans use rice and don't make salads.

One other idea--bread. I use the phrase, "Pair this with any good Mediterranean bread" in my original recipes etc. all the time. Other than water bought from sellers, nothing is really widespread "Mediterranean", used all over the region, except squid, eggplant, goat cheese and bread.
Greek/Turkish coffee isn't everywhere either; nor is tea a good choice. Olives are everywhere also.

Bread is the answer. Mediterranean bread and olives. I think of olives and olive oil, and gyros with a wonderul tzatziki sauce. Bouillabase Me, too, I think of olives, I also think of fish and olive oil and Greek dishes, tomatoes, citrus. spicey Lots of fresh fish, shellfish, olive oil, flatbread. Olive oil, great cheeses, pasta Gazpacho Andaluz... Spanish cold delicious soup with America's help.
Gambas al ajillo... Garlic shrimp... feta cheese, calamata olives, gyros, goat meat vegetables, cheese (especially feta), lamb Not to get technical, but Italian food IS Mediterranean cuisine. But, to go along with this, I would have to say anything with olives, olive oil, garlic, and wine. Seafood, Eggplant, olives and olive oil, BabaGhanoosh(?) with pita bread. Poop Souvlaki and Couscous Hummus, tzatziki, babaganoush, eggplant dip, pitas, pilau. Yummmmmmmmmm! greek or turkish dishes!

Dolmas, hummus, baba ghanouj...

olives, olives olives! Everything that Spanish Cuisine has to offer, Tomato Bread, Olive Oil, Fish, Olives, Vegetables.Etc. mm mm its great to be in Spain...

Take care..
