Sushi - what do you recommend?!

Question:

Sushi - what do you recommend?

I am a sushi beginner. I tried something one time and gagged.
Whatever it was, it was crunchy. What do you recommed for a beginner. Also, how do you eat it? With fingers? In one bite or a few bites? What sauce do you recommend?
Thanks for your advice!

Answers: First of all, good for you for trying new things! Also, am happy to hear you are giving sushi another chance!

Spicy tuna roll, shrimp tempura roll, kappa maki (just shredded cucumber), CA roll (but's that's so boring!). If you like soft shell crab (dragon roll).

use chopsticks & one bite (unless it's a handroll)

sauce: soy & a little wasabi

It's trial & error, go with someone who's familiar with sushi...they'll guide you & different sushi places have their specialities. some so certain rolls better than other. also, you sushi loving friend will eat what you didnt like!

once you're comfortable, then be more adventurous most people i know like california roll. they are very common and can come with and without the vegetables.
I'm glad you wanna try sushi again. most wouldn't.
its healthy and really good. good luck! I prefer california rolls with a tiny piece of sushi in them... they are seaweed wrapped around sticky rice with various contents. I just dip them in soy sauce and eat them whole. Other than that I've tried slices of raw fish and prefer salmon, and I generally eat it in one bite because the texture feels weird. Yes, I agree with Cami. I am not so big on sushi but the only one I like is the California Roll. Its respectful to eat the sushi with chopsticks and you can eat with soy sauce or wasabi (very hot) I recommend cooking it........ smelly nasty raw fish is just gross. Why would you want to eat something that gags you? If you want to look cool eating something that smells so bad, try caviar, at least it's been cooked during the canning process. Well I was going to say a crunchy shrimp role but since you said that what you had was crunchy....I recommend the California Roll. That is what I tried the first time, it was great I love it I usually eat it with my fingers and take a couple of bites. Sometimes I put soy sauce on it or just eat it plain. One bite, just go plain for now. You can mess with the wasabi and soy sauce later.

Do simple ones like inari, veggie roll, California Roll, and shrimp. All of them are cooked.

Once you get past that try spicy tuna roll, philadelphia roll or seared tuna or salmon, or sweet shrimp. They are raw, but a litte more tame.

After that you can get a little more adventurous with the fish like hamachi, toro and squid.

If you consider yourself a pro and you go to a really nice place ( I can't emphasize this enough). You can try Caterpillar Roll, Unagi or Sea Urchin. Bad unagi scars the palate.

Happy eats.

I noticed a lot of people saying "Smelly Fish" it should not smell. If it smells don't eat it. I prefer things like spicy tuna handrolls and sashimi (like salmon). You can always get vegetarian rolls if you can't handle the raw fish.

It is polite to eat sushi with chopsticks or with fingers. It's meant to be taken all in one bite. Everything falls apart if you attempt to bite it. Usually, sushi will be served with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi. I leave the ginger alone but use tiny amounts of wasabi and soy, depending on the kind of sushi I'm eating. Really, just play around and order a lot of things to share with friends so you can discover what tastes great to you. Don't be afraid to ask the chef, either. besides california rolls:
try a kappa roll (rice and cucumber rapped in seaweed)
or ebi ( cooked shrimp ontop of a small bit of rice)
tamago is very good as well (cooked omelet with a sweet taste)
-all types of sushi stick to fish that you are used to before going exotic...try tuna or salmon wraps with dulce..... Hello.
I recommend a California Roll.
its got crab in it that IS cooked.
dip it in soy sauce mixed with a few bits of ginger and a tiny dab a wasabi and its perfect..and depending on what you can swallow. one bite or more whatever floats your boat. shrimp sushi Hi...

Well, for starters their is Sushi and then their is Sashimi.

Sushi...basically has rice one way or another -while-
Sashimi....is served raw (fish and such)

If ur a beginner i recommend you stay away from Sashimi.

Stick w/Sushi. As far as what to try....

Well *California Rolls* are the most common....
Simple crab meat (usually fake anyways), cucumber, & avocado & "sprinkled w/masago...(fish eggs) [[you can always take away cucumbers or avocado or masago if a dont like it]]....Masago doen't have much of a taste it just adds a lil'saltyness to the roll & they give it a lil'bit of a crunch/pop effect recommend adding cream cheese if you normally like cream cheese

Sauce: Soy Sauce will do....some ppl like to dip it in eel sauce ...It's sweet...it's goooood.

Anotherr Rolls you can try are: (If you like whats in it)
*Shrimp Tempura Roll* Fried Shrimp , usually cucumbers and or crab meat. YOU CAN ALSO ADD OTHER THINGS if you want such as avocado, cream cheese, spicy mayo, or just kimshee.

Sauce to go w/it: Eel Sauce (i like Eel Sauce w/any roll that is/has something fried in it)

Oh...their are also Veggie Rolls which can basically consist of the same thing.

You can also try Crab Stix-Basically a piece of "crab" on a little rice ball w/a lil'piece of seaweed (which doen't taste like anything) wrapped around it. [[For this use Soy Sauce]]

STAY AWAY FROM "raw" shrimp which is actually previously steamed if not it wouldn't be pink and stay away from Fishy Fish. The fishy smelly smell might turn you away....Though it should not be a very strong smell in that case don't even eat their.

P.s-Keep in mind that it's all kinda a taste you have to aquire if you've never really been around it. It's all about keeping an opened mind....be willing to try certain things at least once.

I've been eating Sushi / Sashimi since I was about 12 and I'm 26 now...at 1st I wasn't really thrilled about it and found myself always eating the same stuff and eventually just craved it and began trying more and more different things...& now I eat it at least 2-3 times a week.

F.Y.I-
1.Feel free to ask ur Sushi Chef whats in What Roll they'll be more than happy to explain sometimes they'll even give you free samples of things that they are preparing.

2. If you think Soy Sauce is too salty use the Green Cap one A.K.A. Low Sodium one....and you can even add a couple of drops of ur water to dilute it to ur taste

3.Eel Sauce is NOT eel blood!!!

4.Feel free to try appetizers when you go out to eat Sushi it helps get you full faster and gives you a chance to try other meals within the same food content.

~Ex: of Yummy Appetizers:
-Edamame (Soy Beans) but DON'T eat the shell
-Fried/Steamed Gyoza (Dumplings)

Oh....and if you like sweet stuff & go to a Thai Rest. that serves sushi & stuff try the Thai Tea & or Thai donuts What you start with depends on what you like- most people like either cucumbers, avocado, or asparagus, which are usully available as a "maki roll".

Start with whichever you prefer- order the roll, and it will come with a dollop of green wasabi(like horseradish paste) and pink ginger slices.

pour some soy sauce into the little container they will provide, and add just a tiny bit of the wasabi. use Chopsticks - dip the maki into the soy sauce and eat. if you can not use chopsticks, your fingers are preferable to a fork. Then eat a piece of ginger.

Off to a good start- California rolls with roe would be the next step- typically imitation crab meat, avocado and cucumber with flying fish roe( the orange stuff ) caked on the outside of the roll- try it, the fish eggs are really mild

Then Salmon- which is mild and tastes nothing like it does cooked. If you like avocado or cucumber, order a salmon and avocado or salmon and cucumber roll- use the same wasabi laced soy for dipping.

hm- tuna next- now you are getting adventurous. tuna and avocado maki is yummy- if you are still chicken you could get a seared or marinated tuna.

lets move on to the real sushi- no rolls this time:

Start with the cooked sushi- bite sized pieces on top of finger shaped rice patties: shrimp, crabstick, avocado, omelette, - then a bit more adventurous, but still cooked- eel or tako ( octopus) eat with chopsticke, and dip the sushi top into the soy mixture.

On to salmon and tuna, thin slices of each on the rice patty- yummy

then you may as well admit you love the stuff and try whatever is available- my personal favorite is when live scallops are available, served ice cold with paper thin lime slices.

Addicting. California roll- Crab, rice

Cucumber roll- Cucumber, rice, alvacado

Philidelphia roll- Philidelphia cream cheese, tuna, alvacado, and rice *FAVORITE* California tempura or anything tempora is god. that mean the roll has been fried. I like summer roll. I recomend not starting out raw.
I eat w/ chopsticks and wasabi with pickled ginger. for first timer, go with california roll Try something that can know all the ingredients in one glance. For example: cucumber roll, tuna roll. Simple. Small. Safe.

Have fun! I agree with the California Roll and Philadelphia Roll being great for beginners. They are a great way to ease your way into sushi. However, you may want to try something with more flavor.

One of my favorites is the Tiger Roll. It is filled with a semi-spicy crab mixture and the outside is rolled with alternating pieces of cooked shrimp, tuna and salmon and topped with a Japanese BBQ-type sauce .The outside layer may help cut back on the taste of the seaweed wrap, which is what I had a hard time with at first. This is a great roll to try with a friend so that you can try the different pieces that have an outside that you would like to try.

Another good one that has the same idea is the Rainbow Roll. It is a California Roll topped with different types of fish, again cutting back on the "fishy" seaweed taste.

It is customary to eat sushi with your chopsticks in one bite. The seaweed wrap makes it difficult to bite in pieces. If you are concerned about the taste of fish, you may want to try dipping in soy sauce. Good for you for trying it again. I also did not like it the first time I tried it, but now I love it. Have a great time with a friend and enjoy! okay folks - sushi does not mean the food is raw.......... sushi means "rice with". what you folks are gagging about is sashimi - (which is raw). if raw seafood turns you off, try tamago yaki (which is like a sweet omlette) or shrimp (you need to be careful - they have two kinds of shrimp served as sushi - one is boiled and one is called "ama ebi" - which is a raw, sweet tasting shrimp) or try california roll (which does not have raw fish in it - it has cooked crab traditionally or imitation crab - which is made our of boiled fish) . eat sushi with fingers or chopsticks - either way is polite. just plain soy sauce used sparingly or with a little wasabi in it if you like the kind of kick horseradish provides for dipping. common sense is applicable when eating any food - don't put too much on your mouth at once. some folks can handle an entire piece in one bite. some take a few bites. Probably California rolls, although I never liked them.
I always get my novice sushi eating friends to take a bite of eel without telling them what it is and they love it.
Technically it isn't sushi since it is cooked, but it's good.
I would recommend going to a high-end sushi restaurant to try it. I have gone to some cheap places that have sushi and if that was my first experience trying it I would have gagged too.
There is a huge difference between toro (fatty tuna) you get at a cheap place and a high-end place.
I eat my sushi with chopsticks, but on the Food Network they showed the Japanese sushi chef eating it with his fingers. Drowning the food in wasabi and soy sauce is also an American thing, I'm guilty of that too. get something that you know what's in it and sit at the sushi bar have them make it infront of you. this way, you will be less scared! and it will be less of an unknown i dont know wat kind of sushi u had that was crunchy but the best kind to me is the tuna roll....it is tuna (small fillet) with rice wrapped in nuri (dried sea weed)...and u can eat it with ur fingers or with chopsticks..its really good with soy sauce California rolls are a great start for usual begginers.
but i perfer Tekka Makki which is tuna rolled in rice in a seaweed wrapper. It's good and plain, it's also better if you like tuna.

You can eat it with your fingers, but you can also eat it with chopsticks. I would recommend eating sushi with soy sauce..and if you like spicy stuff, put some wasabi in the soy sauce. but sometimes sushi makers put wasabi in the roll.

I think in Japan, you're supposed to put the whole thing in your mouth..

i hope you begin to like sushi more! :D
