Cantonese Food Ingredients in Manila - HELP!?!

Question:

Cantonese Food Ingredients in Manila - HELP!?

Hi all! I found a website that contains authentic Cantonese recipes I really want to try to cook from scratch. Ambitious, yes. Completely above my head, definitely. So I need to find the following ingredients in MANILA. Help me please!!!

I. Somewhat Familiar
- Wheat starch
- Tapioca flour
- Malt sugar
- Mashed bean paste
- Sesame sauce (is this diff from sesame oil?)
- Five spices powder (is this the same as the ones found in groceries?)
- Custard powder
- Abalone sauce

II. Completely No Idea
- Dong gui powder (Google spells it as dAng gui--the same?)
- Shao Xin wine

Hope you guys can help figure out which stores to get these in Manila. To Chinatown frequenters, do you have any idea if I can find these there? Hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks!

Answers: Hi, great to hear that you're trying out some authentic recipes.. the ingredients do sound like what i use at home.

Dong-Gui Powder is usually spelled Dang-Gui Powder. Dang-Gui is a chinese herb, also called Chinese Angelica Root. Here's a photo of it: http://tcm.health-info.org/herbology.mat...
Its mostly sold in chinese herbal stores, rarely in other grocery stores.

Shao Xin Wine is Rice Wine used for cooking. Shao Xin is just the brand's name. You can use any cooking rice wine if you can't find the Shao Xin brand.

Sesame sauce is the same thing as sesame oil.

Five spices powder is the same kind you'll find in grocery stores.

Go to Chinatown and you'll definitely find most, if not all of these there. They're quite commonly used in Chinese cooking.
