No, this was huge chunks of cut grilled steak and it wasn't sweet, however it had to have Soy sauce/Shoyu in it... Honestly the secret is in the seasoning salt. I really don't know the ratios of it but it consists of Hawaiian salt, cracked pepper, ginger, garlic. All are dried. Rub that mixture on the steak according to how salty you like your food. Then mince garlic and rub it on. Then sprinkle some Worcestershire sauce on the steak and rub. To make it juicy you can spread some garlic butter on the steak. Then put it on the grill and its all good. That's the basis of the steak in Hawaii. No marination, no shoyu. And honestly I haven't tasted a better steak anywhere else. Use a porterhouse or t-bone steak for best results. But sounds like you hardly bbq, so practice with a top sirloin first.

I'll give you a little extra. Try this simple steak sauce. Take the juice from the steak and mix in some oyster sauce and the a small hot Hawaiian chili pepper (or any hot pepper if you like hot). Trust me that sauce get lots of complements. And its simple as hell. i don't know... But, i used to live in new jersey. and there were these truck vendors that used to sell these amazing sub sandwiches in a parking lot at rutgers university. they were called the 'grease trucks' and all the sandwiches were huge and full of greasy fried foods like mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers and eggs. the sandwiches had names like 'fat moon' or a 'fat coco'. now i'm in california and i wish i could eat one so bad. so i definately feel your pain... Oh poor ting! I'm not sure what you are talking about, could it be teri beef? Try this link for all kine Hawaiian recipes. Not sure what cut though. Maybe try flank steak. If you freeze it first then you can slice thin before you marinate. Don't forget 2 scoops rice and mac salad! Good luck. Im not sure what "steak" you mean but I agree with lolo-lala. Check out the Alohaworld recipe site. More than likely, it would have been either a teriyaki beef or korean style bbq if from a lunch wagon.

Basic Teriyaki marinade:

2 lbs beef sliced thin
(use rump roast its cheap and have the buther slice it)
1/2 c soy sauce 1/2 c sugar 2 Tbsp mirin or sherry
1 clove garlic chopped fine 1 inch ginger crushed
Combine all and soak meat for 2 hours or overnight.
Broil / grill or barbeque.
