Where can i buy ancho chile powder?!

Question:

Where can i buy ancho chile powder?

We have looked throughout Wal-Mart and can only find whole anchos. But we need the powder to use as a rub on tomorrow's barbecue!! I have looked online and saw that McCormick has one, but no such luck finding it anywhere. Has anyone bought ancho chile powder from a major grocery chain? Any help would be appreciated.

Answers: Since you can't find ancho chile powder, I'll give you my recipe for an ancho chile powder rub..
First you need about a large handful of whole anchos peppers, next take off all of the stems. Now roughly chop the anchos as much as possible then place at least a cup of chopped peppers in a blender. Second add 1/4 cup of chili powder, 1 tspn onion powder, 1 tspn garlic powder, and 1tspn brown sugar. Finally blend on chop until mixture is consistent. If you need more rub, repeat the process, you shouldn't double up the ingredients because they won't blend properly.
If you don't have chili powder 1/2 paprika and 1/2 cheyenne pepper will work just fine. If your wondering about the brown sugar, it will give your meat a nice carmelization on the crust. Salt is not necessary. Good Luck, Happy 4th Source(s):
Grandma's recipe 80yr's old San Antonio, Texas Depends where you live. Down here in Texas its simple and at H.E.B., Whole Foods, etc. Not sure in other places. In the future, try specialty online places--Daves Pepper Palace in Spring, TX send out all sorts of great HOT stuff!!! Check it out. They were on FoodTV once! Have a great 4th and Happy Birthday U.S.A. some of those bag it yourself stores, (we have winco and sack n saves here) with the big bins of spices and bulk foods have that. I just saw it at winco the other day. Also maybe try a Mexican Store, they have probably several kinds of chile powders, in those little packages. We have a million Mexican stores here in reno, With lots of cool things like that, different spices, drinks, etc. I have seen it in dollar tree stores, too, in the foods row. What would be ideal is if you had a Mexican Specialty store.
They would certainly carry it.

I know in Tennessee we have them all over the place. www.penzeys.com
I am a chef and I have used this company in every restaurant I have ever worked in. They have both mail order and retail stores. Their prices are reasonable but the quality and freshness is top notch. If you need it tomorrow look for a Mexican or Latino grocery store in your area. The price will be very good and the chilies will be the highest quality. You will probably have to look in the mexican food section for the little packets of ancho powder...sometimes it is in the produce section, hanging in bags.

I make my own, and it really is easy, but you have to open all your windows or cook outside on the grill because the fumes from toasting the chiles on your stove can really irritate your lungs and eyes and nose.

Here goes:

Take about 8 dry chiles anchos, remove stems and seeds and cut them open into large pieces that stay flat. Heat a heavy skillet or griddle over medium low heat, and lay the chiles flat on the griddle. You will probably need a big turner to keep them down flat.

Don't burn them...just toast them til they get a little soft and change color. Let them cool. They will get crumbly as they cool. Throw the pieces in a blender, and blend to a powder.

That's the easiest, cheapest way to get ancho powder. Many recipes make you toast the chiles THEN open them to remove seeds, but that is too messy once they get crumbly.

Good luck. Your recipe should be great. Anchos are soo tasty.
