Is maize meal the same as masa harina?!

Question:

Is maize meal the same as masa harina?

I saw it in Tesco today. I've been looking for masa harina for months, to make corn tortillas. The Spanish on the bag of maize meal said "harina de maíz refinada" ("refined corn flour" not the corn starch used for thickening). Is it the same as masa harina?

Unfortunately I live in Shropshire where there are very few Hispanics. The number, if not zero, would be very close.

And I speak Spanish, no need to translate for me thanks.

Answers:

Definitely not the same. Do a websearch of masa harina under images. Print the picture. Then take it to your nearest largest supermarket or food market. I'm assuming you're in the UK. Speak with the manager and request that they order it. Masa harina is a world renowned product and they shouldn't have a problem ordering it although it may be a little pricey. Otherwise you might want to consider purchasing it online. But a little masa harina goes a loooooong way especially when you have a craving for corn tortillas. And fresh ones taste way better than store bought ones. If you would like a step by step recipe for wheat flour tortillas I have one on my web link. Just click on my profile and you should find the recipe under side dishes.
