Can I use sour cream instead of shamenet (Israeli)in baking ?

I am pretty sure that sour cream will work,but I just want to know if there is something even closer.For the record,Cottage cheese and riccota cheese are very very different.


Answers:

yes, but be careful that the instructions really call for shamenet (hamutza). Shamenet metuka refers to sweet cream.
The consistency of the sour cream may be a little different than shamenet that you could buy in Isreal but they are essentially the same.

A interesting tidbit on the side: in Germany an alternative name for sour cream (saure Sahne) is Schmand which came from schamanet through Yiddish.
