What makes abalone costs so high?!

Question:

What makes abalone costs so high?

Does it have to do with the taste?

Answers:

When I was a kid some 50 years ago, it was possible to get abalones by wading in from shore from almost all parts of California. Abalone have disappeared from much of the California coast. Hunting is banned in Southern California. Scarcity is partly the result of the re-introduction of the California sea otter but mostly it is because of pollution. Abalone was never cheap but it is its scarcity and demand that drives the price.
