What is a Merkin?!

Question:

What is a Merkin?

The other day at work, my collegue who was sitting right beside me, (it was hard not to overhear) was talking to her friend on her mobile, and she said she had "just put her merkin in the microwave to heat it up". When I asked her if it was nice, she went all coy, and would not answer. my question is: What is a merkin? I think it may be some kind of West Indian food.

Answers:

as stated by others a merkin is indeed a wig for a womans jack & danny region!
others however have not identified the origin of the word, a merk was the name given to the young street boys who used to collect the hair from barber shop floors and sell it on to high class ladies (merkins are only worn by women of a certain age and distinction, im sure your very dear friend is one). it was a myth that when a lady was entertaining she would often put her favoured merkin in a coal fired back scuttle so it would be accomadating to her friends, it would also give off a singed fragrance that was meant to be the height of fashion. the slang "i must heat up my merkin" in all probability relates to your friend suggesting she is going to get a bit of attention around her money box region!
also modern merkins are interlaced with fragrant oils and aromas, lavender, jasmine, patchouli that can be released when heated in the microwave, apparently its a lot better than the smell of 3 day old tuna fish normally found down there!
hope that helps!
