For anyone who DOES NOT LIVE IN THE SOUTH....but has visited. What are some things that we have that you?!

Question:

For anyone who DOES NOT LIVE IN THE SOUTH....but has visited. What are some things that we have that you?

1. Do not have where you live
2. Have never heard of (phrases, sayings, foods, etc)
3. Wish you could have where you live.

I have some friends from upstate NY and Canada who had never heard of grits or jelly. I couldn't believe it. This was several years ago though. I myself had never heard of the term Newfoundlanders (?) use for fish&chips. Can't remember it though. I wish we could get canadian beer!!!

Answers:

I know you said people who are not from the south, but I think I qualify to ans. your question. I was born in south, lived in Illinois longer than anywhere, then retired back to the south a few years ago. When I first went to midwest....there was only yellow cornmeal in a Quaker Oat box. It was awful, I never did learn to make cornbread with it. In the south, we used it to bake bread for the dogs. There were no grits, no Golden Eagle Syrup (made & sold only in Alabama), no okra, nothing but DRY blackeye peas, no salt pork. I had to learn to cook all over again. The worst thing, when we ate out, it wasn't done! We southerners cook our food to death.
My southern contribution to Illinois....I had my relatives send me garden seeds. I planted peas, okra, squash, pole beans and butter peas. My neighbors thought I was crazy. At harvest time, I cooked and invited several of them over. They tasted their first fried okra and fried squash.
Those same people were hooked on it, and to this day, they still cook it. You can buy all of that stuff now, thanx to Super Walmart. lol.
I'm back in the south and have been re introduced to yes ma'm, no ma'm, thank you ma'm please, and BLESS YOUR HEART. I never realized how much I missed it. I still however, hat the small town concept here.
