How do you make beans and rice?!

Question:

How do you make beans and rice?

I saw a show on tv recently where they were in a country in Latin America (sorry, I cant remember which country or even which show for that matter). Anyway, the hostess was tasting locally prepared Beans & Rice and they showed it being prepared. They sauteed onions and peppers in olive oil, then added rice which they cooked until the rice was tender, I assume about 45 minutes? Then they added a sauce which the hostess described as "like steak sauce" and the bottle looked a lot like Heinz 57 Steak Sauce although they didn't show the label. They then added the red beans and heated it through.
Does this sound right? Would it be Heinz 57 Steak Sauce? Would I have to add any water or just add the rice into the sauteed onion/pepper mixture? And am I right about the length of time to cook the rice?
Any of you expert cooks out there: please help-I really want to prepare this for someone special.
Thanks!

Thanks guys for your answers.

I'm sure it must have been Brazilian; I know it wasn't New Orleans style if it was Latin America.

Am I right about the Heinz 57 steak sauce?

Also we don't eat meat so I would want to leave out ham, bacon etc.

Thanks again!

Answers:

All latin countries do cook their beans and rice differently it sound like it was from either Cuba or somewhere like Belize in Central America. I cook rice and beans the Jamaican way and the thing we use is browning it looks like steak sauce but it isnt its made with sugar as the base but it is no sweet neither i brown sugar when caramelized. You can try the jamaican version called rice and peas (beans actually) or look at the websites at the local countries i list one for you. Either way I am sure you will enjoy it as a great side dish
