Saffron sold in northern thailand?!

Question:

Saffron sold in northern thailand?

does anyone know about the saffron sold in markets in northern thailand and chiang mai. it seems too cheap to be good at 3 dollars for a small bag.

Answers:

Here are some things to look for when buying saffron:

Does it have that distinctive saffron fragrance? Or is there a faint smell of turmeric?

Are the strands intact (long) or are they small broken pieces?

Is there alot of "powder" or "saffron dust" sitting at the bottom of the bag?

You want a strong saffron fragrance (no turmeric smell whatsoever), long intact saffron strands and no "powder" or "saffron dust" sitting at the bottom of the bag.

The world's best saffron comes from Spain, then Iran.

$3 a bag is dirt cheap, you can try it & decide for your self. Buy it & soak a few strands in a couple tablespoons of milk. If the milk turns saffron color, then taste it. If you like the smell & the taste is okay, try adding it to a recipe and go from there.
