Question:

In California, I ate the most wonderful vegetable which my daughter called "sour gourds."?

She said it comes frozen, from an Indian market, and she sauteed it with onions, beans and rice. One of my grandkids won't touch it; the others gobbled it up, and I ate the leftovers! Unfortunately, I'm sure its not available here, but if any of you have eaten it, how do you prepare it? Thanks.

Answers:

Bitter gourd (karela) is different from SOUR GOURD (digitata). I am not sure if it available fresh in the US.

It is readily available frozen in any Indian store.

This is a very kid friendly recipe:

INGREDIENTS:
1 pkg of frozen sour gourds cut into bite size pieces, thawed
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 inch piece of ginger, peeled & finely minced
1 cloves of garlic, finely minced
1/2 tsp black mustard seeds
1/2 tsp jeera / cumin seed
pinch of asafetida (optional)
2-3 curry leaves (optional)
1-2 green chili cut lengthwise or 2-3 dried red chilies (OPT)
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp garam masala
juice of 1/2 a lime (or lemon)
2 tbsps oil
Salt & pepper to taste
Freshly chopped cilantro leaves for garnish

VARIATIONS: add 1/2 cup of thawed frozen peas or 1/2 can of chickpeas (or any of your kid's fav veggies).

METHOD:

In a wok on medium high heat, add the oil and when hot very carefully add the black mustard seeds. After the splattering stops, add the cumin seeds. Then add the green chilies (or dried red chilies), curry leaves & asafetida.

Add the onions & stir fry until slightly golden. Add the ginger & garlic. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes.

Now add the spices (turmeric, ground cumin, garam masala, salt & pepper). Stir and add the sour gourd pieces. Let cook 3-4 minutes and add any other vegetable (peas or chickpeas...). Reduce the heat to low, cover & let simmer 4-5 minutes.

Add the lime juice, garnish & serve!
