Indian cuisine.... what is your favorite dish?!

Question:

Indian cuisine.... what is your favorite dish?

I've tried a few indian dishes and i absolutely love it. the thing is, i dont remember the names. the only thing i know is naan .. duh, easy right?
well, what can you recommend if i go to an Indian restaurant here in the US? i like chicken.

Answers:

well, since u like chicken, you could try out the tandoori chicken. but naan is rather dry bread. so for that 'gravy-soaking' effect you could try a 'chicken tikka masala' - thats cubes of bbq chicken in a rich gravy. or maybe 'malai murgh' - thats chicken with a cream sauce. 'chicken korma' is also nice. then there are the SPICY south indian varieties but I don't really know if you'd get them in the US. They go well with both Naan and Rice - that'd be 'Kerala chicken curry' or 'Chicken Chettinad' or even 'Malabar Chicken Curry'. But those - at least what we get in India - would be nowhere near mild. They are exquisitely hot :-) Another great option is Goan food - that's half-Portuguese and half - Indian. Chicken Xacuti, Chicken Cafreal and sometimes even Vindaloo (though thats usually Pork)

If you like fish, you could try Fish Tikka, or Fish Amritsari with Naan. Or 'Kerala / Malabar / Goan fish curry' with rice.

Now for the veggies and lentils.... Veggies -

Alu Mutter/ Palak/ Gobhi - thats potatoes with peas / spinach / cauliflower.... plus the masala, of course.

then palak paneer - spinach + cottage cheese cubes. YUMMMM.....

then lots of dal varieties...dal is lentil, you see. they are all great. then there's another called malai kofta curry - those are veg croquets in a cream sauce. super rich.

but i will give u a lowdown on the names so that u'll be able to figure out whats what

malai = cream
alu = potato
palak = spinach
gobhi = cauliflower
dal = lentil
South Indian food is hotter, maybe even tangier. but North Indian food uses more fragrant stuff. It is also usually richer than South Indian.

Few more suggestions.. if u can, try

Biryani - Rice cooked with meat/veggies and spices. YUM!!!

Paratha - Kerala paratha is a nice, rich and flaky bread. others aren't so soft but they are just superb. U also get stuffed parathas. also spelt paranthas

Thali meals - North / South Indian - a full meal complete with rice, bread, starters a WHOLE BUNCH of curries and dessert. But usually, you cant choose what curries you get. Anyhow, they are usually excellent :-)

Bon Appetit , and do let me know what u chose ;-)
