a kiwi is an endangered nocturnal bird from New Zealand, so it sounds funny when people talk about using kiwis in their recipes...

I believe the kiwifruit was named a kiwifruit because it looked like a kiwi. Another name I remember is Chinese Gooseberry.
Anyway... kiwi is just a shortened nickname for the fruit.
In fact, I believe the kiwifruit growers market the fruit as "kiwi".
