Where can I buy hominy grits in online in Canada, or in a store in Toronto?
Why is it so hard to find them here? And if you do a search, you get tons on political hits because in Canada, "grits" is an old slang word for the Liberal party.
Answers:
I am a former chef and live in Toronto, most grocery stores sell in the international section a yellow cornmeal from a west Indian company called either Grace or Goudas.
But in the US the Hominy or Grits is of the white corn variety, I heard on a Food Network show how the Raptors team chef at the ACC had to have some imported from the US, I have been buying them for years in Toronto, in the Portuguese area of Dundas and Ossington you can find white cormeal in bags from a company named Ferrera, they use it to make a traditional portuguese cornbread, it is round and is available in alot of the supermarket in the area and around town. It is a 1 kilo bag and cost around $1.50, in T.O you may find some of the Bulk Barns selling it, there is one in the Dufferin Mall at Dufferin south of Bloor.
