Where did the gyro originate from?

I know gyros are associated with Greece, but they are similar to shawarma and commonly remind me of many Persian dishes. Is there any connection?

Your first statement is totally correct . They did originate in greece and the actual pronounciation is yuro.With the abundant use of lamb meat and the onions they stayed the same for hundreds of years til Persians added the Tsiki sauce. The use of cuccumbers in greece wasnt tht accepted until persians made it popularby mixing it with garlic and yougert. Thus you have the modern Gyro,
