What is a rice ball, and how do you eat it?!

Question:

What is a rice ball, and how do you eat it?

Is it just a ball of rice? Do you just pop in your mouth? Or do you break off a piece?

Answers:

I live in Hawaii, and we have a long tradition of adopting and adapting foods from our many cultural heritages. A rice ball is a compressed, slightly triangular, portion of rice. They are usually wrapped with a strip of dried seaweed called "nori" and often have a small, salty pickled plum in the center called "ume". We call them "musubi" but I am not sure if that is the proper Japanese name for them. The are roughly the size of your palm, and here we just take a bite and eat 'til gone. Here is a link to a picture of what I consider a musubi or rice ball: http://diskovery.ltsc.org/student/kiyoko...
I hope I have helped. Enjoy, stay so ono (tasty)
