British people: What are your FAVOURITE breakfast foods?!

Question:

British people: What are your FAVOURITE breakfast foods?

Details would be nice, since I'm really sick of American breakfasts (cereal and milk-ugh!)! I met two guys from Liverpool once, while traveling in Europe, who said that English breakfasts are the best: steak and eggs...sounds good to ME! Any other tips?

WEIRD! I expected some real gut-busting recipes! I used to eat Swiss Birchermuesli, yogurt & all, but it got soggy too fast, so I switched to homemade granola (much crunchier). But is that REALLY British???

matt_r_baker: sausage and sausage is your running theme? Reminds me a bit of the Python's Spam routine! ("Eggs, beans and SPAM, SPAM, eggs, sausage and SPAM...etc.") Still, you've gotta love sausage!

Sal*UK: You're on about bacon, right (which I love, btw) ? Are you SURE you're not CANADIAN, eh???! lol

Okay, baked beans on toast...not bad; harks back to some meals my mom used to make (aka "Baked-bean sandwiches"), which, if you DIDN'T like, you could trade for almost anything, except a meatloaf sandwich, the gold-standard of my generation's bagged lunch!

PIZZA with lager? Excellent..and already there, mate! (and what's a kebab, to you? We have "shish-kebab" in the States, usually grilled bits of meat & veggies on a skewer).

BUT...What about TRADITIONAL British breakfasts? Do

"UGHHH! Blood pudding...I can't get past the "blood part"...I'd sooner eat Lark pie! What's "black pudding" (black from...BLOOD???!)

Oh! èmm? - you basically included EVERYTHING! lol We have "Toad in the hole" but call them "Firehouse eggs" (in New England anyway--no idea why). Yummy! Bubble & squeak sounds great...but what's with that weird name? The only thing to which I object is orange marmelade. I got burnt out on it in Austria! They LOVE "Semmeln" w/marmalade"; what a weak breakfast!

silversurfer: I LOVE The fried tomatoes and mushrooms idea! Maybe the chicks in that film would have done better if they'd only added mushrooms to their fried, green tomatoes?

P.S. - You Brits are really into "mugs" of things, aren't you? That's cool! I hate tiny cups!

Answers:

The most traditional, old-fashioned breakfast:

boiled eggs left in the shell and set into egg cups, do not open but serve that way so they will not get cold ~ the person eating breakfast cuts them cross-wise with his knife and puts butter, s&p into each side; the bottom half stays in the eggcup, eaten with a teaspoon .. ..... medium soft-boiled are nice and you can dip your toast into the egg if you wish ...

the toast: dry ....unlike Americans, Brits toast their bread dry, let it cool (!!), and serve it with butter and jam ...

you may also like broiled tomatoes: slice in half horizontally, put s&p on top and place under the broiler for a couple of minutes

bangers .... a sausage that tastes very unlike American sausages and is 3X better; milder

some hot cereal of your choice, especially oatmeal ...might be served with butter and honey or golden syrup ...

juice is more American; as is a half-grapefruit

tea or coffee ~ cream, milk, sugar, lemon

That was always our breakfast at home and by now I am just as sick of it as you are your cereal and milk! I like rum-raisin cheesecake or pumpkin pie for breakfast. And some good strong hot coffee, and a piece of pastry, or some plain tea made with a fresh strawberry put into the hot water with the tea leaves. Now that you mention it, I think I'll have some steak too! xxx
