What is the difference betweem chestnuts and hazelnuts?
I looked at their images and they look the same to me. I am not being a racist but they really look the same to me.
I am serious.
Answers: Hazlenuts (also known as filberts) are small and hard. They're used the same way other nuts are used: for snacking, ground into a powder and used in baking, used in chocolates, etc. Their shells have an orangeish hue, and they are available year round in the U.S. You can find them raw in their shell or roasted and out of shell.
Chestnuts are much larger than hazlenuts, about 3-4 times the size. The nut meat inside is much softer than your typical nut. They are often found only around the holidays, and have a dark brown, glossy shell. Since the meat is soft, they are not sold like typical nuts, and you will not find them in the bulk section of your supermarket, or in a nut mix. You can roast them and eat the soft insides (you will need to pierce them like a baked potato before cooking, or else they might burst), or you can find the cooked nuts packed in jars. They're often used in Christmas stuffings. Chestnuts are a little bigger than a pingpong ball, with one flattened side. You can roast them in the oven (be sure to make a little slit in each one for steam to escape, otherwise they can burst), then when cool, peel and dice them for recipes. Roasted chestnuts have a sweet, mild flavor and when cut into 1/2 inch pieces, are good in turkey dressing, or with wild rice.
Hazelnuts are filberts. You will find these in a can of mixed nuts. they are the round ones, about as big as a marble.
There is a hazelnut liquer, called, "Frangelico", it comes in a bottle that is shaped like a Franciscan monk. Great for after dinner. chestnuts are a small dark brown almost brass color and are usually roasted and eaten. hazelnuts are a lightish tan color and are commonly roasted and eaten or eaten raw or made into a paste for desserts Hazelnuts are a good source of protein, as are most nuts. Chestnuts, on the other hand, are very high in carbohydrates. Oh right! You're not racist! Only a bigot would be so blind to think that there is no difference between chestnuts and hazelnuts!
You should be ashamed of yourself...
